Basic Gear Setup
First of all, I did some research but still am a little confused as there are 93492384372598235 threads out there
1) What gear do I need? Just gun, mask, co2 canister, and paintballs?
2) What is the best full set I can get for approximately $100? I'll be playing at a private field where they say costs $80 just to rent so I thought I might as well spend a little more and get a set for myself. How much is it average to get a CO2 canister filled and buy an average amount of paintballs? We'll probably play no more than an afternoon (5 hours?).
Should I buy used from ebay? Or new? I won't be playing much - probably only a game or two per year. So I would like to keep the price as low as possible.
According to the stickies, the Spyder V1 and Imagine are pretty good but they seem a little out of my price range? Some friends recommended me a Spyder Rodeo and some posts here say that a Spyder Sonix is decent. It looks like the Spyder brand gives the best bang for the buck?
I also read that theres things like eyes, electric, hoppers, barrel plugs, ceramic barrels and stuff like that. Are any of these essential or anything to upgrade?
Thanks.

if you want basic, basic setup, then you'll need a marker, mask, co2, a hopper, and of course paintballs..
if i were you i'd spend a little bit more than 100$ (if you could) the spyder imagine is a great gun for beginners, and will do you just fine. i'm not 100% up to date on resale for them, but i'd guess somewhere around 60-80$ for one... then a hopper... you could always go with the traditional gravity fed for 5$, which will get you through a day, but may have occasional jamming problems or, you could buy a used viewloader revolution motorized hopper, and not have to worry about it.. you could probably find one for 25-30$ used.. a co2 tank will cost you around 15-20$ for a 20oz, and will cost about 4-5$ to fill, and a mask, you'll hear it from me, and almost everyone else on here... dont cheap out on your mask, 50-60$ is what you'll be looking at for something that will perfor MUCH better and will never fog compared to the cheap 10-20$ ones...
it sounds like the kind of playing your doing, i'd look around for used gear...
with an imagine, you wont need to worry about eyes... yeah, you'll have occasional chops, but no biggie... if you plan on playing at a field, a barrel plug is a must or they probably wont let you play.. a barrel upgrade is definitely nice compared to the stock imagine barrel, but on a very small budget like yours, i wouldnt worry about it right away.
also, another extra that is definitely nice to have, get yourself a squeegee, for when a ball breaks in your chamber or barrel... paintballs fly TERRIBLY if they have to fly through broken paintball mess, a squeegee will clean that crap out for you...

Thanks for the reply - looks like a setup like that will hit the $150s though, especially with shipping and all. Any recommendations for those ebay packages?
And yes, the field I'll be playing at requires a barrel plug.
Will a cheaper gun like a Rodeo or Sonix work? I found a Rodeo with a J&J ceramic barrel which is supposedly good? What would be a fair package price for one of these?
Most of my friends will be renting from the field so their guns won't be super good either - just looking for something cheap to play around with. Hopefully < $100

For a marker, I'd go with the Spyder VS1. But, make sure that you get yourself a decent mask before you go and get a new marker. The safety of your face is more important than your marker.

On the comment that it costs 80$ to rent at this field, does that also include the price for the field paint? Checked the closest field to me, and it seems the rental charges are cheap, it's the paint that pushes up the price. I'm new as well, so I hear where your coming from....

Field paint? You mean the paintballs? Yes, it includes a whole package. Normal prices are around $20 just to use the field - we have to pay for a private field because we have our own 60 people group so the prices are quite a bit more (to pay for our staff)
I'm in NorCal near the San Jose area
Checking PM box right now

Does the field require you to use their paintballs? That's where it appears to me the larger cost of the rental fees are from.
I can get a case of 2000 balls from a store for 20$, but the field sold paint will run me 90$

he's saying they rent out the field for their own personal use, because of that the prices go up.

I was curious on this, as all the fields I can look up that are near me, require you to use their paintballs, rather than bringing your own.
If you can use your own paintballs as well, it sounds like a really good deal there...

I think I have to buy paintballs from them :\
I found this setup to be a pretty good price, but are the mask and hopper any good? The seller says it's a "VForce full face mask" and a "PMI hopper" http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/2849/6a691tu2.jpg

how much for that package? you'll most definately need a motorized hopper. The mask isn't all that great either.

$70 + $20shipping = $90
This package is for a Rodeo, I guess I should downgrade to a Xtra then? I'm trying to get everything I need for about $100 with shipping, what's the best I can do for this price range?

$20 shipping? what a ripoff. talk him down to $70 shipped without the mask and hopper. then buy a nice mask that'll be comfy anda hopper that can feed faster.

How much would that cost me? What kind of mask and what kind of hopper?
Would I be able to do just as well get an Xtra (they seem to be much cheaper) and buy my own mask, hopper, ceramic barrel, co2 tank? What would you recommend for these separate components? Could I get the cheapest, adequate setup for my price budget?

30-40 used.....
look for a set of these, probably going to be the most comfortable for you without trying different pairs on. There are many other nice brands, some I like better some less, but without you trying them on it's hard to know. Those are USUALLY very comfortable for most people

Dont get the evo dude....
They break like crazy, and don't feed nearly as fast as advertised. BTW shinryu....you know there's a three out now as well right...
For an affordable hopper, the eyeforce wll pretty much be replacing the egg, and the vlocity junior is only a little more and is an excellent hopper...
