Paint Matching
Hey everyone, I have a quick quesiton. A friend and I are looking to get some paint to go play some ball next weekend and we are trying to find paint that is going to match our barrels well, the only problem im having is all the paint im finding just says its .68 caliber. So needless to say knowing your barrel bore isnt really helping us as the paint dosnt seem to be very specific. He has a flatline barrel, im using a stock a5 barrel for now. Any help on this would be great.
Also im getting a PPS Barrel made but im not sure which caliber size to get the barrel in, .685 or .690, Im thinking .685. But any advice is welcome, thanks in advance.

I always just overbore it, if you underbore the accuracy will suffer. I have a .692 UL and I never ran into decent quailty paint that doesn't play straight.

Most paint I have seen is .68 caliber, having a larger barrel would create a poor match? But are you saying better to have some room then have it be to tight?

Yes, it is always better to have more room for the paintball. If paint gets hot or cold it loses it shape, the paint I usually use, sometimes gets bigger than other times and vice versa.

while most paints are labeled as .68 they all have different sizes, this is where the 3rd # comes in. Some paints are known for their small bore, such as a .685. Most paint you will encounter is going to be in the range of .688-.690. Your local shop or field will likely be aware of the more exact sizing of the paints.
If the bore you are using is smaller then the paint you will likely chop the ball in the barrel. This is why people will generally overbore and use a overly large bore to eliminate this risk.
While people love to tell you how important matching paint to bore is I have never seen a noticeable effect. The quality, grade, and freshness of the paint are much more influential in the accuracy of your gun.

I found some paint charts and barrel charts which helped me alot. I also decided to go with the barrel that was .690 because my buddys flatline is .692 and well probably be sharing paint, I appreciate all the help guys!

For future reference, you can't match paint to the barrel (unless you're willing to buy several different cases of paint every time you plat...), you must match the barrel to the paint. If you're looking to match, you will need at least three different barrels/barrel backs/inserts to do it effectively.
The cheapest and easiest way to get around this is to just overbore and buy one relatively large size that will fit the majority of paint you will come across, .690 should probably be fine.

Yeah the overboring makes sense id rather suffer a minute accuracy penaltys then highly increased cases of ball chop. (Ball Chop, that just sounds bad...)

If you are going with a single bore barrel bigger (but not much bigger) is better than smaller. Even in the same bag of good paint there will be differences some will roll through and some will get stuck hard.

the only problem with overboring is that the bigger your barrel is the more it will bounce around as it is shot through the barrel.. causing horrible accuracy.. if you're going to over bore. don't do it too much..

According to posts Ive read its typical for paint to vary in case by .002, Im taking this into account when buying paint, and will buy paint that has been researched to measure out .688-690
