Jester: I verbally speak it as marker, but I usually type it as gun, I don't know why though. But she knows what a marker looks like and it fires projectiles. To her, that's a gun.

ya thats common to outsiders but if you want to set her straight ask her to stop calling them guns, guns are meant to hurt people, paintball markers are meant to mark someone with paint, thats all, i know iv looked up some safety stats before for a school paper, way back in high school, i know there were some stats on paintball that basically said any other physical sport is more dangerous when looking at it from a safety standpoint, football, basketball, baseball, so will she let you play any of those? there was even a statistic that said more kids require er care from riding bikes than from paintball yearly. if you want to wrap all of extreme sports into a catagory then paintball is BY FAR the safist.
if i got some time this weekend ill look around on my computer for that paper, no promises though, i may have gotten rid of it.
plus its not like the NPSC would let people under 18 participate if they didnt think it was safe

I'd say about a month or two ago, from my local field. I witnessed a kid sliding to a bunker, and his mask flew off. Ended up taking one to the eye, he ended getting surgery and now only has one working eye. Paintball is dangerous.
|
That would be the kid's fault for not having proper tightness on his mask, or the lack of a good mask at all. And if you see someone on the field with their mask off, DON'T SHOOT AT THEM! DUH! All that paintball takes is some common sense.

The mask was fine, it was just that the kid made a pretty bad dive. Most of the time, when your adrenaline is going, and you see someone your not gonna check if his mask is on, your just gonna shoot and sometimes you can't even see his face/mask.

Chsmadden,
Have your mom go to:
WARPIG.com Welcome to Paintball Page
and have her read up. Paintball is safe if the people involved use their heads and follow safety precautions.

Yeah, WARPIG is one of the first sites that I discovered when I started getting into paintball. They have a lot of really good info. I'm excited to have found this forum just today by accident. It is good to find another place to "hang out" with other pballers.

Throat injuries are very rare, but playing paintball with throat protection is better than no paintball at all. Show her this link Minnesota Safety Report on Paintball - MPL
According to that you're 465 times more likely to get injured at home than while paintballing.

This was the site she found: WARNING! YOU MAY BE AT RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH
Logic tells me if you protect yourself completely, death, loss of sight, ear injury, and throat trauma can all be avoided. Is that true?
|
lol, sites like this make me laugh. For the over 20 million people who have played paintball they can only find 2 who have died from it... Has she even heard of football? lol.
I love the part where it says even with advancement in face protection, the eye injurys have not decrease, but then offers no actuall data or proof of this AT ALL.
This site for the most part is full of one way BS and is designed to simply scare people. You could make a sight like this about any sport.

Okay, so lets back it up a little. Your 15 and your mom is worried about you playing paintball because what little she knows is bad info. The key to winning any argument is to never be wrong. Don't be afraid to incriminate yourself and hurt your case by telling her all the negetive that you know about the sport, then ask her for a reasonable alternative that she would feel better about you playing. Once you have that answer, be it tennis, bowling, golf, swimming, whatever - go to a non paintball affiliated source (because she will trust that more, she's likely to view paintball affiliated sites as bias) like wikipedia and get all the safety info you can, print it and give it to her. I'm sure she'll be suprised to know that paintball has only about 0.2% injury rate per 1000 exposures. You can also easily point out to her that it is obviously safer than more physical sports like football and soccer. Talk to her more about the safety equipment than the marker, tell her how cool it is that you have a fan in your mask so it doesn't fog up, not your markers bps or barrel length. And if you want to take it really far, take her to your local field and just spectate, and make sure to gravitate twords older players that will watch their mouths and have more respect for your mother than some of the younger crowd (you don't want her thinking that you'll be hanging around some hooligans). Last, you live in the Bay Area kid. That should say enough, it's where I'm from and I can't wait to get back, but it's still a real messed up place. Even if you live in a nice area like Napa, Monterey, or the Norht Bay you have more of a chance gettin' beat up for your bike than gettin' hurt paintballin'.

I found this interesting.
How to get started!
Look up how dangerous ANY sport is and you will find deaths, injuries and plenty of other bad wraps.
I think the gas tank in your moms car has a better chance of exploding than a Co2 tank(if taken care of properly).
If you play level headed, and play with level headed people youll be ok.

Im 14 and my mom was the same way at first. I did what someone already mentioned and took her to a paintball feild. A few hours later my gun was being ordered so i say give that a shot. The worst ive gotten hurt was being shot on open skin. And even thats gone after a few minutes and with the adrenaline going you dont notice it till you see the paint.

I usually stick my gun under their mask and ramp on their face for a few seconds to disorient them, then I proceed to tank whip them in the nuts repetitively until they pass out in the middle of the field so I can wear them on my back like a buffalo hide and sneak behind the rest of their team. lol
If your parents DON'T pay for your paintball stuff, put this in your sig
