a professional airsmith, or someone qualified, tests the tank to see if it is still safe to keep using, and putting air in. usually you dont have to get it done for a few years, not sure how long for nitro tanks, but co2 it's every 5 years i believe....

Steel Nitro tanks are every 5 years. Fiber wrapped are every 3 years.

Around 20 dollars. It's basically a guy that looks at the tank for deep scratches, dents, or bulges (Kind of like when you smash a football and a big bulge appears).

Personally, if the tank is in good shape I don't get it hydro'ed. I think some tournements require the hyrdo be current, however.

Steel can be either 3 or 5. It depends on the type. (ie 3HT tanks are 3-year).

Likewise for Fiber. Some are 3 and some are 5. Its always good to check before you buy. A 3-year hydro is a major headache.

CO2 tanks larger then 2" are 5-year, and no hydro is needed for tanks smaller then 2"

There is a listing at the DOT website with all the authorized hydrotesters in the country. They are often located at scuba, and fire-safety supply stores.
Its usually about $20, and sometimes more if they have to remove the valve for you.

Yes. In fact, I think they drill a hole into it if it fails.

However, you DO get to use the valve. SO, you only have to replace the tank itself.

THe main reason fiber tanks fail is bad scratches. SO, just take care of them, and they should last a lifetime.

Yep taking care means using your tank covers, and not dropping your nitro off of a building.
