you drop a ball in the insert/back to see how it fits in the barrel. You want it snug enough so that it doesn't just roll out but so that you can blow it out with a puff of air. This should be repeated with about 5 balls to make sure since the size can vary slightly from ball to ball.

Also, when you buy paint you can normall see the bore size somewhere on the package.
