Hello everyone,

I have a couple of questons, First i used to play paintball back in the day when i was in highschool (94-97) back then we used the pump guns, I have played once since 97, but want to get back into it as i never lost the love for the sport just lost focus for a while. First, I want to get a gun, I read all the sticky **** for newbies about guns but am still a little confused by all the new guns and terms, i dont want to buy a cheap gun only to upgrade it to a good marker in 3 or 4 months, so what is a good marker for this? What is the difference between a $1500 BOB LONG and a $250 spyder? (for example)
What markers do fields rent, what is the best marker you have seen a field have for rent. I will be playing speedball and woodsball. What would you recommend fields have for markers for rent? If a one speedball team has all bob longs or like markers, and the other team has all Tippmanns, what are the advantges/disavanges for each team and there markers?

THanks HANGLOOSE

There are many differences between a Bob Long, and a Spyder. Mostly, Bob Long woulb be an all around better, and more stable gun. I suggest you look in the different gun forums. Also read reviews, if you're gonna shell out over a grand for a new gun make sure you don't regret it. Might I suggest the AKA Viking? If I had the money, that's what I would go for. Runs at a very low pressure, and is a tank of a gun.

Most fields rent out Tippmann 98cs. They are extremely durable, run great with CO2, and are noob-friendly. The 98c is also what I would recommend what fields rent out. It's easy to clean, very durable, and runs great with CO2. So you don't have to worry about your rental guns freezing up on a cold day from CO2.

If you go high end, you're going to have to use HPA. HPA, is much more consistent, cleaner than CO2, and it doesn't run cold. So it's much better for your gun.

Well the Dragun One/Tes are decent choices...

You can find the Dragun The One for 230 dollars. It can hit 30 bps(way enough), has eyes (a protection against chopping) and is very reliable.

Then there is the Dragun TES (tactical electronic Sniper)
It is more on the 150 price range but only hits 20 bps and has many more problems then the one will ever have.

The difference between a spyder and a Bob Long Intimidator is that the spyder is electromechanical and the Bob Long is electropneumatic. In other words when you pull the trigger on the spyder, it actuates a circuit that trips the sear allowing the spring to force the bolt forward to open the valve for the air to enter the chamber, so basically one component of the function of firing the marker is controlled by electronics. With the Bob Long more components are controlled by electronics, so it is more precise and therefore more consistent.

On top of that, the Bob Long comes with higher quality stock parts. You can upgrade a spyder as much as is humanly possible, including purchasing 'the one' kit which turns your spyder into an electropneumatic and it will still never be on the same level as the as intimidator. You get what you pay for. Will the spyder be a really nice marker that you can compete with. I believe so. You will be able to attain a relatively high rate of fire and with the right upgrades achieve a reasonably high level of consistency which is all you can ask of a paintball gun anyway.

On top of the high price of the intimidator you will also need to invest in a compressed air tank, whereas a spyder will operate fine on CO2. Eventually you will likely want to invest in compressed air anyway, but to begin with CO2 is much more cost friendly ($20 instead of $200). Unless you are 100% sure that you want to get involved in the sport at a high level, investing in a nice spyder with a new barrel and electrohopper would be a good place to start.

thanks guys for the comments

I want a gun, I dont want to throw down 200-500 now and then six months from now spend the 1000 needed for a better gun, so i guess that i would want to just throw all the needed money into it now for a gun so that i wont want to upgrade a 200-500 gun all the time say 3-5 months from now. I am looking to get a gun that will last and will not need to be upgraded or replaced for a better one in the near furture.. That being said, idont need a flashy 2 tone/ faded, neon color gun or any other "pimp" ****, just a gun that can compeate on the field with the best of them.

Thanks Hangloose

hit me up on AIM, pbpunk1160 if u want direct help cuz i may be able to help you.

i know what u mean tho, it doesnt make sense to buy a low-end gun to realize later that u can outshoot the gun and such. theres a lot of factors in buying a gun.. new/used, price, condition, type, ect. hit me up id be glad to talk to you. if u dont have AIM, the next step is to figure how much u wanna spend overall for everything (gun, tank, hopper, ect) like sojah said, and are u willing to buy used because tahts also an option

Yes, used can save a large amount of money but just be careful who you buy it from.

Well your lucky to have the money.. I wish I could buy a high end gun right now but money is holding me back.

Buy a stock DM4 then get the wicked air sports chip. get a HALO with a victory board. Probably ought to get the aluminum cone for the HALO as well. I can't tell the difference between the stock one and the Auminum, but they say the cone will never break. Lifetime warranty. Mine looks pretty much like the plastic one except that it is a different color.

If you want a high end gun, then forget about spyders/clones because like I said, they will never be as good as the high end stuff. If money is no object and you're looking for straight performance, not looks, then I would say you'll be better off getting something used, because the big things these days is milling/annodizing etc. etc.

If money were no object for me I'd get a Viking, Halo B w/ vboard, 68/4500 hpa tank and a barrel kit. The ones I have seen don't dick around with the milling, and they perform very nicely. Dye Matrices are also very nice, and the older ones aren't milled as much as the DM4's, you could probably get a nice used one for $700, give or take $100. A used Timmy would also be a good choice. Most people will tell you that a Timmy (Bob Long Intimidator) or a Matrix is your best bet for a high performance paintball gun.

As you said you don't want to have to buy upgrades in 6 months, you also need to make sure to invest in a good hopper, air tank and at least a nice barrel if not a barrel kit. 68 ci 4500 psi hpa tanks are pretty much the standard size that is a nice fit regardless of what position you play. Holds enough shots that you won't run out mid game, and not so big that it makes your gun cumbersome.

Halo B is probably the most highly recommended hopper on the market, but I believe that the Empire Reloader B actually performs slightly better. You should be fine with a Halo B with victory board, but if you really want an Empire reloader, they are quite nice.

High end barrel kits are not my specialty so I won't comment except to say that barrel kits are generally preferred because they give you more adaptability in the paint that you use. You get a number of different bore sizes so you can be sure that the paint you are using fits your barrel properly.
