The purpose of cocking?

What's the purpose of cocking? I've read the info on spyders etc posted here, and from my understanding the air propells the paintball on its own. What's the point of having such a large distance for the bolt to travel in order to trigger the air/drop the paintballs etc?

YOu obviously dont fully understand how the gun works. When you fire, the bolt and hammer travel forward and open the valve which alllows the air through. It has to cock back like that so that there is enough tension in the spring to open the valve enough to get the air through needed to re-cock.

its cool and stuff that you dont know, becausewhen everyone started ballin they didnt know either, and yes sickdawg is right,
it also cocks back so the bolt can move back far enough to let another painbtall into the chamber, then when that whole bolt and hammer assembly moves forward, the hammer pushes in the cupseal, in the valve, leting air in, which goes through the bolt and propells the paintball out
wewt.
