Consider it like the eyes on garage doors, they make sure their is nothing in the way before it closes. However, the eyes in paintball markers do the opposite, the bolt will not go forward untill their is a ball in the breach.

The eyes on the gun sense the balls in the feedneck, so the gun does not chop.

the bolt will not go Forward until their is a ball in the breech. Not backwards This reduces chops and ball breaks. So eyes are good to have.

eyes are beams of light going horizontaly thoguht the bottom of the barrel, right underneath the detents. There are 2 different types of "eyes". 1 is "breakbeam", this requires 2 eyes on opposite sides of the barrel below the detents. It is called "breakbeam" because when a ball goes from the hopper and into the barrel it "breaks the beam" of light telling the marker it is ok to shoot.the other is called "Bouncebeam". this version differs from the first one, it only requires one "eye" and shots a beam of light bounceing off the inside of the body. once the ball is altheway in, it tells the board its ok to shoot. Im not very good at explaining, the info can be found at http://www.scenariodreams.com/eyes.htm

so your gun can watch you and make sure you are cleaning it right. lol jk they are things that sence or see paintballs when they are in the breech to make the bolt go foward makes it so you won't chop your paint

Eyes on a paintball gun are made specifically to make sure that you don't have two balls going into the area of which the gun's bolt hits. If you don't have eyes on your gun and two balls enter the chamber of which you fire there will be one ball that is chopped and paint will get inside your marker.
"Eyes" make sure that you don't have that problem. They pretty much senses the paintball or paintballs in the firing range and will not hit the second ball. Now sometimes this method doesn't work and the ball is chopped. But it's better than having a higher risk of ball choppings.
So if you don't want to spend a lot of time cleaning your gun, then I'd get a gun with eyes on it.

What if its closed bolt? .
The marker will not cycle unless a paintball is ready.

You are thinking of detents. Detents are so you do not double feed and your paintball does not roll down the barrel. All guns, now-a-days, have detents. Back in the day getting your Autococker drilled for detents was a big thing Of course the ball on second ball will hit the ball being loaded, then the bolt comes and blocks off the feedneck.

If that was true, the gun would never cycle. Doesn't the bolt cover the eyes?

yes, the bolt covers the eyes...
also, there is a thing called sensi, some angels have it.
its a little spindle shingy with a little rubber dealy thing sticking into the breach, so when a ball lands on it, it knows there is a ball there so it will shoot. if there is no ball there, then the rubber thing wont go down. it does the same thing as eyes, except in a different way
most people prefer eyes to sensi.

I believe instead of the single eye you were referring to a reflective eye, shockers have them.

the ball detent is on the other side of the gun, the opposide side that the eye is on

Not true. On my matrix I have 2 eyes, right above them are the ball detents. The eyes are inside these little "holes". I'm using a breakbeam, some guns only have one eye though which are "reflective".

there are two types of eyes :breakbeam eyes and bouncebeam eyes. The break beam has one eye that waits untill a ball is in the breach and it doesnt fire unless the laser goes through the paintball,it doesnt work good with dark shelled paint..A bouncebeam has two eyes, this works fine with dark shelled paint. It doesnt fire untill a ball has breaked the beam between the two eyes ensuring there is a ball in the breach.Hence the name "break"beam
