When you are dealing with someone who wants to sell you something, you need to take what they say with a grain of salt. There are many great retailers out there who really want to make their customers happy, and are willing to go the extra mile to do so, while others are just there to make an easy buck off you. You need to be able to tell the difference and deal with them accordingly. Maybe he said it because he wanted you to buy a different barrel from him that was in stock, and maybe he really thought it was a poor choice in barrels, and was trying to prevent you from making a bad decision, we'll never know.
That being said, a lot of the information that you obtain from people is subject to interpretation. For example you said he said:

dislike them, in the second, they don't dislike them, they just don't
like them. Ambiguity is at the heart of many misunderstandings.
I, along with many other paintball players have used the J&J ceramic barrel, and I have yet to hear of anyone disliking it. You have to keep in mind that it is a lower priced barrel, so you shouldn't expect the same performance that you would get from a Dye Ultralight or a barrel kit. It's just not in the same league. But $ for $, the J&J ceramic is a very solid barrel that will serve you well if you do in fact opt to purchase one. Look for it online, I picked mine up for $29 on ebay, and like I said, I have nothing bad to say about it. When I tried to get it off a site, every site I could find was out of stock. That in itself told me something about its popularity.
