Ok this is a guide/ experience tale for noobies from a noobie himself, so please don't move it to another forum.
These are tips for noobs, alot may be just commen sense for experienced players but for people like myself, every little thing learned helps. However, veteran players feel free to add comments/ suggestions/ tips.
This last Saturday I went with 5 friends to Hollywood Sport Park. This was my 2nd time playing and this time I had my own gear.
First part, my gear:
Spyder Victor 2 gun $60
Smart Part teardrop barrel $40
Generic 20oz co2 tank $27 including air fill
Generic hopper $7
Rented harness and 2 pods $5
Entrance fee $17
Locker rental $5
Splitted cost of pb balls $27 for 1000 balls
Going into a new field with new equipment was very exciting and kinda nerve racking since that I didn't know if my "cheap" equipment would do the job. When we arrived at the park it took our group about 2 freaking hours to get ready for our first game. We had 2 guys (including me) with Victor 2 and 4 guys with fully upgraded Tippman A-5. Actually it took the Spyder Victor 2 guys less than 20 minutes to get ready. I didn't know I was supposed to oil up my gun prior to use. So I had the field's gun shop spray some type of oil onto the spring parts, and I put 3 drops of gun oil into the bottome line or that part where you screw the air tank onto the gun.
When then proceeded to the firing/ chrono range. This was the moment of truth, how would my $100 (including $40 barrel upgrade) Spyder Victor II would perform. The first ball chronoed at 320 fps! I was very impressed that it actually fired that fast! The staff had trouble slowing down the gun, and I wasted about 10 balls getting my fps to 275. My friends with their A-5 were chronoed around 230.
When then proceeded to play, here are things that I have learned as a noob..
- Team group strategy, it is very hard for a team of 5 noobs to stay together and follow through with a plan, you're better off trying to stay with 1 or 2 player from your group. Once the action starts, everybody will be spread out, unless your group is experienced, most likely your group will be all over the field.
- You've heard it a millions times here, don't get tunnel vision! Which I did and got shot for it. For some reason, it is like a natural instinct to get tunnel vision as a noob, you are so excited by the game that you only want to concentrate with what is in front of you. Train yourself to look at least 180 degrees around you. Even if you have a friend to cover one side, keep your eyes open! You will be sot at from every angles.
- Shoot first ask questions later, I kicked myself many times for seeing a player and not sure if he was on my team. I didn't want to shoot a team mate so I hesitated. By the time I realized the player wasn't on my team, it was too late. So if you see someone facing you and you can't tell if they are on your team, and you have a hunch then fire at will! Better shoot them first then you getting shot. Most likely if it is a team member, their back should be facing you.
- Have a small rag available in games. In one game my location was bombarded with paint, I wasn't hit but the splatter from the paint smeared my googles. I wasn't able to see and trying to wipe with gloves or a shirt will mostlikely not work since that your gloves and cloth will be dirty. So I'm going to have a small rag on hand in the future.
- When shooting at a moving target lead your shots. I made the mistake of shooting at a person moving and not leading my shots. I didn't hit anything over 100 feet because of that.
- When playing in mazes, try not to make noise or scream out loud to friends. I was in a maze with a friend and was yelling at him, not realizing that 4 guys were coming through the maze.
Also when guarding an area in a maze or a chock point, be aware of other point of entry. An enemy will enter where you think he or she may not be able to pass through. I almos got lit up by 3 guys while guarding a wall thinking that the gap on one side wasn't accessible. Luckily the whizzle blew and three guys came through the gap that I thought no one could fit through.
- If you think your going to be a hero, don't be. The last game I got too cocky and advanced on my own, next thing you know I'm actually behind enemy lines and got wasted for it. As a noob you should always work with team member in order to advance, move up with players on your team or you will may even be mistaken for a player from the other team.
Everything will come together as you play more and gain experience. I was very satisfied my with Spyder Victor 2, it shoots far and with great accuracy, get the barrel upgrade. I definetly recommend this gun for noobs who do not want to invest too much on their first gun. Also don't forget to oil the gun before playing and have a tool set for guns, that will come in very handy! For people who are out of shape (that includes me), I also recommend to work out your legs, especially squatting exercises, and sit ups. I played for 5 hours and my legs are like jello now.
