Your just as bad as him..its not nitrous or nirous, its NITRO, short for nitrogen. HPA is the same as nitrogen...it stands for High Pressure Air.

Dave do you have any idea what nitrous is???? Its an extremely flamable gas used to make cars go faster and put you to sleep at the dentist.

nitro is a nick name for hpa because it was hpa's predecessor. in the 90s when a higher quality gas was needed(since co2 is not good for the more delicate parts of a higher end marker) nitrogen was used but was soon replaced by HPA. so, some people still use nitro as a name for HPA.

Why is it that everytime someone feels SMART they make a thread about "noob" ideas and thoughts, when there are pleanty have been made . They could have searched, but no they wanted to feel like they aren't n00bs.
Anyway, does it really bother you? If so go do a survey of every n00b you hear say that and ask them why. And they are all the same meaning. At least you haven't heard them say NOS (race car nitro). Its f****** annoying.

They call it Nitris, which is Nitris Oxide. Used in Cars and at the dentist.
Nitro is Nitrogen. Used in paintball guns.

It is an understandable mistake - NITROgen, NITROus - Since Nitrous is jetted into an engine (and because of the past five year fast and furious trend) the same people with the same short attention span know about it.
Nitrogen has fewer pop-culture tie ins. So it is overlooked and Nitrous is the mistake made instead. Most people just assume.
At least you don't hear people going "do you use CO2 or NOS?" - that'd really make my day.

god what stupid people...we use either NITRO(short for nitrogen as master o paint said), or we use HPA(short for high pressure air). nitrous, short for nitrous oxide is what is used as an oxidizer to be injected into cars for added HP(short for horsepower, duh.)

The answers are hidden in the posts. =)
Basically it could be several things... they hear someone say nitro, and assume they meant nitrous or they just don't know there is a difference between nitro[gen] and nitrous, or any number of other reasons.

Nitrogen gas, or N2 is teh gasious form of the element nitrogen.
Nitrous Oxide, is NO2. Its part Nitrogen, Part Oxygen. It has a built in Oxydizer, so it burns very well. This is why its used in car engines to give it an extra boost. IT burns faster then the regular gas and oxygen mix, so the pistons move faster adn harder, giving a short burst of horsepower, RPMs and overall speed.
Nitrous Oxide also has uses as an anestesia(sp). It will put you to sleep or put you in a dreamlike state. The dentist might use it instead of novacane injections.
Nitrogen and High PRessure air are different, but the same. Remember, the air that we breathe is 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and about .1% Carbon Dioxide and traces of other gasses. Compressed air is 78% Nitrogen. Nitrogen is 100% Nitrogen. Thats only a 22% difference. And when used in a paintball marker, there really is not much of a difference.
Both Nitrogen adn compressed air are a gas at room temperature, and unless compressed and cooled, will not turn liquid. This makes it better then CO2 becuase it will not turn to a liquid and evaporate in your marker, causing velocity fluctuations.
Nitrogen, HPA, Nitrous Oxide, are all different things
EDIT: Can you tell me the difference between balaclava and baclava? It sounds the same, and n00bs are generally stupid and like to pretend they know a lot, so they make common mistakes.
