Hi, new guy here.
Hi everybody. A few weeks ago I got the idea in my head to finally get into paintball, so I looked up this forum and some other places on the net to look into it. Right now I'm stuck in Kuwait with the army, but I'll be going home at the end of Feb. so I figure my gear will be a good gift for myself.
I've played pb a few times before when I was younger, and I've done plenty of drills/wargames in a past few years with the military too. I'm good with squad/fire team tactics but I'm sure that paintball is plenty different though so I'm content w/ being a newb at the moment.
Right now I'm just gathering info so I can jump right into the swing of things as soon as I get home. All I really have access to is the internet and my buddies crazy drunk paintball stories (I think I'll stick with the net). Theres a ton of good info here, but I'm always open to tips and advice.
As for gear, I'll probably just order it here and have it sent to my house. I'll probably get a used tippmann, a good mask and a big bulk order of paintballs off ebay to practice with. I'm a simple guy when it comes to that stuff.
Anyway, hopefully I'll learn a lot here to help me get my feet wet. Later
Adam

Welcome to the forum and paintball adam. I am also in the military and spent some time in Iraq. Be safe and get home so you can hit the fields.

what do u plan on playing when u get back speed ball, or woodsball.
Woods ball- Go with the tippman marker
Speed ball- Get like a spyder imagine.
Good luck in Iraq

I looked up the ranges back home for the Portland OR/Vancouver WA area and there are a handful of both kinds of ranges with in a reasonable driving distance. I suppose I'll try both and see if I like one more than the other. Ideally I'd like to get a marker that would work well for both. I looked into the tippmann partially because of it's size to tell the truth, but I'll give the Imagine a look. It is electronic right? I bet that's not too complicatd I've just never dealt with one before. I'll check it out.
Later guys,
Adam

Simple Kingman electro's like the Imagine are not complicated, some may say its easier to work.
For both woodsball and speedball, i would just get the imagine. The only reason i say that is because you told us you had an abundance of both, and id rather play speedball and woodsball with an imagine then with a tippman.

good to see some meat heads take the time to look up.
im still in que for basic and won't deploy untill the court has had me testify against someone on a crime which is a bunch of crap.
so here is where your at you want cheap...it sounds like your not full bore addicted yet. just give it time I suppose.
So wanting cheap isn't bad its fine I started off that way as well. you have the main stream options of a tippmann or spyder as said above...if your worried about maintance its no problem if you can maintain a rifle you can work these. when you get slightly higher up the pole on the more complex guns you will need some training but the tippmann and spyder area is pretty easy to strip down.
Both the tippy and the spydy will preform about the same with the spyder you will have an advantage of speed while the tippmann is slightly more tactical and is impossible to break. its got the look and feel alot of guys like. the sypder is gonna be like your saw machine gun while your tippmann will be your m4. your only looking a diff of speed.
OHK.
so here is what i would suggest if your only going to be playing in the woods rehlm and want to actually become good. Buy a pump paintball marker. generally cheaper than the others but getting cheaper than a used tippmann is hard to thrash.
Id say like a spyder hammer or a tracerr. great guns cheap and light. the thing is it slows you down forces you to use your shots a bit more wisely. They offer slight advantages in the way you shoot but really accuracy wise they aren't any better. but if you watch two players line up and each has 5 shots to do something the pump player will beat the semi player a large majority of the time.
Check out the pump section on this forum...its towards the bottom of the gun section. you will be at the dissadvantage when you start but its like starting as a child...you learn to run alot better if you can crawl first. if you slowly build from crawl to walk to jog then run by the time you get a tourney grade gun in your hands there will be no stopping you.

Okay, after reading all the advise I placed my order for my gear. I got...
Spyder Imagine 2k4
J&J 12 inch ceramic barrel
Revolution 12v hopper
2 20 oz. Co2 tanks w/ on/off
JT pro flex mask and an extra lens
2 pods
squeegee
I think I did all right, I spent a few $ more than I planned but life goes on and I'm sure someone out there has gone more all out than myself. Now to just get out of the sandbox...

Pretty good, that actually all works quite well for the price.
A note on the imagine. I wouldnt waste time with the Full Auto/Burst firing modes. Fields dont allow them, they arent as fast as they seem, and end up wasting paint in the end. The less you use them now the less you feel the need to later.

Right now I'm at college, but I live around Vancouver. There are some okay places, but most of the good ones are the woods one. If you're looking for good speedball courses I'd suggest the ones in Portland, just from my personal experience. Good luck with everything!
