Comrade- Here's one for you
I know you are the student of communist doctrine.
Put yourself in February 1917, petrograd soviet-
Bolshevik, menshivik, or SR?
Yeah I just finished an Imperial Russia final....wrote about 6 pages in an hour and a half on it, so it's fresh at the moment .
**edit** o course the topic is open to anyone. Just thought CM would get the greatest kick out of the question(highly curious to hear his response as well considering the answer he gave to his doctrinal beliefs once ).

What'd you end up writing about for the final? And what are you trying to ask me? I don't speak texas... =\
Btw, if you like 20th century Russian history, you might like 20th century Mexican history. I'm a fan of both

What party would you have stood with in 1917. I'm curious to hear what a modern socialist/communist looking back on the subject would say.
our subject was- "According to Leon Trotskii, in making the February Revolution"the masses were far ahead of their leaders." Did SR, Meshevik, and Bolshevik leaders expect a revolution in 1917? How did they react? Account for the rise of Kerenskii. In what ways did "what is to be done" and the April thesis demonstrate that lenin was prepared for the task of revolutionary leadership? What were Kerenskii's biggest mistakes? What were Trotskii's most important contribution to the October revolution?"
I obviously argued for suprise on the part of the revolutionary leadership.
Kerenskii made to many friends to quickly. As a trudevik he played to the masses, but leaned towards left SR.
I contrasted the changes lenin makes between what is to be done and the thesis, his ability to adapt to the change in circumstances but stay with principles.
Kerenskii's downfall- Kornilov, hands down.

Ah very good very good.
I'm a fan of Leon Trotsky so I would have followed him and joined the Red Army. I actually have a couple of really good books by Trotsky I can recommend if you'd be so bold as to hear them (I like his writings better than Lenin's). Start with, "The Revolution Betrayed," and then if you really wanna go crazy read, "The History of the Russian Revolution."

Actually Dr. Dunning recommended the first one to me. This class, unfortunately, only led up to October(old calendar)1917. I will not be able to take anymore histories where I am in my major, so the professor who taught it is helping me compile a reading list to "finish the narrative" so to say. Very interesting to get the complete story of the revolution, without the cold war dribble of "communism is bad, therefore the tsar must have been good". The proff I had is probably a wee-bit communist in his leanings, but did a great job(IMO) of sticking to the facts of the matter without heavy bias one direction or the other. I'm hoping to audit his class on pre-imperial Russia in the fall.
BTW- Lenon may have been an amazing orator, but reading his writing is like pulling teeth with no Novocaine.

History. I'm only allowed to take a certain number of hours in major, and I can't count them as electives.
It's complete schite, but luckily I can audit whatever I want.

A long but super interesting book on history is 'The People's History of the United States.' I'd tell you who the author was but I loaned my copy to a friend =\

I kept all my books, so I've got works on everything from american history to global slavery...
It's really a shame that my interest has actually BROADENED as I've gone through my senior classes, rather than narrowed toa particular topic of interest I might want to pursue in grad school.
It really is not fair the way college degree plans are laid out. The bureaucrats are slowly trying to turn it into a free-form highschool degree, instead of allowing the one studying to choose what they would like to take.
