And so the world ends...
Well i always knew about this 5th grade, that the mayan calendar ends at 2012 so historians believe that they believed the world to end at 2012. And other of their prophecies seemed to have come true. But humans are on the mindset where they take action and later come up with ideas as to why they do it. So this could possibly be another one of those "oh see it was true, that is of course..." making long connections as to how it's true.
Then again other so called prophets have also written down the idea that the world will end in 2012. But the long connection idea applies to this as well. As well as the idea that writers take ideas they've heard in the past and basically recreate it.
Anywayz i was talking this over with my friends and some believe it also has to do with the rising temperature in Yellowstone national park which happens to be an active volcano. This volcano is apparently large enough to nearly destroy the world and block out the sun across the world.
Anyone else believe all this hub-bub or do you guys just plan on denying it until it happens

I remain optimistic on the whole 2012 hing, but the Yellow stone park theory I have heard and have discussed over the theory and believe it to be an exaggeration.

Even though Yellowstone is big, I thought of would only cover north and south America.

alright what about the other theories going on...let me pull them up...
the sun storm theory
Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made a startling discovery: our sun is in a bit of strife. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic, and it's supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the Earth with so much radiation energy, it's been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse, and calculations suggest it'll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012
The atom smasher (though it's scheduled for 2012, they could easily just not use it)
Scientists in Europe have been building the world's largest particle accelerator. Basically its a 27km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the Universe tick. However, the mega-gadget has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it's properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They're predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a basketball.
What the Physicists believe
This one's case of bog-simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berekely Uni have been crunching the numbers. and they've determined that the Earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they're claiming their calculations prove, that we're all going to die, very soon - while also saying their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 percent- and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.
The Change of Poles theory
We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that sheilds us from most of the sun's radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call north and south have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so - and right now we're about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is underway, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches.
it seems like everyones pointing towards 2012

The temperature at yellowstone is not the bad part. Its the temperature underneath. Bill Bryson wrote a good bit about Yellowstone in "A Short History of Nearly Everything"
Here are some of the facts: Yellowstone erupts on average every 600,000 years (**** you new earth creationists) and its been about 630,000 years since its last eruption.
Thats an average. There is evidence that proves that it erupts frequently and then there is a long period where it doesn't erupt.
Just because there might have been a pattern before doesn't mean that pattern will still hold true.
Predicting a volcano is about as easy as predicting an earthquake (which is not very possibly).
You're going to trust a culture that sacrificed children to gods to give us an accurate year for when the world is going to end? The Aztecs aren't known for their fantastic scientific endeavors.
The particle accelerator is not going to produce black holes, they already have particle accelerators that don't do it. The longest one of these theoretical black holes would exist for would be a couple trillionths of a second before collapsing on itself.
I don't even know where to start with the claim that "physicists at Berekely" claim the world will end with 99% certainty using only statistical calculations.
And since when does magnetism have to do with deflecting UV rays? Last I checked that was our ozone.

The only interesting and even seemingly plausible theory on the 2012 is the end of the world junk goes like this:
What the Mayans actually predicted was the passing of the Earth through a certain point in the galaxy. I don't remember the exact details on this, but I think it was the center point. What I mean is, if you imaginee a horizontal plane that goes through the center of the universe, the Earth moves in a sinusoidal kind of wave through this plane (that's the best way I can think of to describe it). At some times it is above this plane, and at others below. Basically they're predicting one of these switches.
Because of this passing through it's said that it might cause a pole shift due to new gravitational and magnetic forces. They say this might cause some interesting ****, like the place starting fire, etc. (See pole shift above—I only skimmed the thread originally.)
But that's all speculation, and in my opinion they don't really have enough facts to base any real, definite this is what's going to happen theories on. Guessing isn't my business, so I don't care.
Side note...
If the Mayans were so damn smart, why did they wipe themselves off the face of the planet?

Whats the use in worrying.... Tony, I thought the Spaniards wiped them out when they came dancing across the water with their galleons and guns.

The Mayans were gone before that. Look up the Classic Maya Collapse—they were disappearing a good 500 years before the European conquest of the Americas. There are several theories, but the one that makes the most sense to me says they simply exhausted their landbase and slowly died off because they could no longer support themselves.

Well, at least the end will be interesting.
The only one I think has a good chance of occurring and causing catastrophic events are the pole shift.

i don't know about that theory of the world ending in 2012... i mean throughout history people have always liked acting like they knew what year it would be in.. i guess we will have to wait and see.

time to stand in the street corner with the sign "the end is near"... with any luck you'll be right and rejoice for the half second before you die.
lol @ pointlessness
C'mon. It's not going to end. It'll get much, much worse before we perish as a race. But don't fret! life will go on.

The magnetic field deflects the radiation from solar flares.
To Snow- I read that book a month or so ago and liked it for the most part. His writing is top-notch, and I really enjoyed the anecdotes. But, I was really disappointed with his lack of explanation on some really important topics (I think thermodynamics only gets a paragraph/footnote) and the amount of scientific errors he made. I still need to email him asking if he plans to release an updated version in the future.
To sumsimpleracer- You really need to check your science. Lets take a closer look...

I'm not an expert on the sun or anything, but I'm sure one of the reasons we're seeing more "radiation energy" is because we have more technology that will feel the effects of radiation. Like I said though, I'm not a sun expert. But that doesn't change the fact that you're making very wild claims with no evidence. So, I suggest you look for some reputable sources on the subject.
