Yes and no honestly lol. I have never really known/heard the true difference between the formats. Just wondering why there is a 5 man, 5 man xball, and xball formats and the real differences between them.

Regular 5-man is boring, semi-automatic, no coaching, and scored by points for eliminations, players alive, flag pull and flag hang, generally with a 5 minute time limit per game.
5-man x-ball is scored the same way, but you play 3 other teams I believe in your group in a best 2 out of 3 series, coaching allowed, ramping allowed, and I believe with the same 5-minute time limit. Still pretty boring, but better.
X-ball involves two teams of generally 8-12 players, depending upon the division. There is ramping and coaching allowed. In the PSP you play 4 other teams in your bracket, and top two generally move on, as well as 2 wild cards depending upon the event and number of teams. Points are scored by hanging the flag cleanly. If you hang the flag, you get a point, therefore matches are scored similar to traditional sports such as hockey, making scores like 3-1 etc. In division 3, the format is a race to 5 points with a 15 minute time limit for the entire match. There are 2 minutes allotted between points, but the game clock continuously runs until you reach like 5 minutes or something, then it stops between points. Division 2 is a race to 7, and same with Open. NXL is a race to 7 or 9 with 2 halves, I'm not sure of the current limit. The best part about x-ball is the use of the penalty box. If you cheat, you get either a minor penalty, a major penalty, or a gross penalty. Minors expire if you are in the box before the other team wins the point. Majors never expire until the 3 minutes run out. These penalties are crucial to avoid as they will change a match undoubtedly.
