Paintball club at school!

Yesterday and today I spent alot of time doing some reaserch and asking questions. I went to my Asst. Principle and asked him who I need to talk to in order to get a paintball club going. He told me if enough kids were willing to join and their was a faculty supervisor then he would bring it to the school board. I went and talked to my favorite teacher and he said he would love to be a part of hit. Finds out he used to play paintball and he never even mentioned it. I went around asking a couple people if there was a club if they would joined. So far their are 17 on the list. We arent a very big school either. Only about 110 kids in each grade. There is not a doubt in my mind that the school board will agree. Along with the club there is the NCPA wich hosts a tournaments and has a season for Highschool and colledge level play. After the club gets going I am thinking getting a team together inside the club made of only the most dedicated players.

How cool is that man!

Am I aloud to post the NCPA website?

Thumbs up

There is no "season" for college or high school play. Tournaments are year round, but whether or not you can make it to those tournaments is up to where you live and what the weather is like.

Don't be so sure about the school board agreeing- even here at the college level, we had a hell of a time trying to get the club going and getting funding. Even now, the school doesn't give us any kind of significant funding for tournaments or covering basic costs for practices or rental equipment.

Two suggestions for you:

1) Remain optomistic, but don't get your hopes up. So far there are very few high schools anywhere in the country that have a school team. Fact is, high schools don't have the money to allocate to a school paintball team when there are no other high schools to compete against in the area. Not to mention that a lot of parents out there think paintball is a horrendously unsafe sport, so expect a LOT of opposition from parents in not wanting their taxes going towards paintball, a "potentially harmful sport". Plus getting trademark licensing for your equipment (jerseys and the school's name) are near impossible to get for high school paintball.

2) Do what you can while in high school, but look forward to college. College paintball is FAR more widespread, and because universities are basically corporations they have a lot more funds to disburse to any student clubs and teams. Right now our paintball club here at Utah State is not under athletics (simply because we don't want to compete for their funds, or be commanded by school bureaucracy) but we operate as an independent student club and team. Transportation, field entry fees, practice costs (paint, air, etc) and tournament prices are WAAAY too steep for even my high school back in Cincinnati (Mason High School) which was a VERY rich school by national standards. Universities are far more liberal in giving out money and potential for fundraisers is MUCH better because you've got TENS OF THOUSANDS of students to appeal to.

Plus at the major tournaments, notably the NPPL, PSP, Skyball and NXL, there are NO high school divisions. There ARE college divisions, and it's a lot more competitive and cheaper.

If you have any other questions about the NCPA, just post and I'll be able to answer them for you. As a college team, we have to go through them for all our support and information, so I know them VERY well.

That's great man, Especially since it sounds like the teacher will really help get it passed. Hope it works out for you.

Duo's right too though about not expecting much funding. I'm at a small university and the club here is a student organization. They give us $50 for each member we have each semester, we're only allowed to spend $200 at once as well, and any left over money doesn't carry over to the next semester. Luckily our advisor is awesome and picks up the extra until enough time passes that we can turn in more reciepts.

I thought it was a "season" type deal because the NCPA keeps track of the tournaments and they have the National Cup. I wasnt expecting to get funded. This all started as just wanting to get a group of kids together to just chill and play without hassiling kids to get motivated. As far as tournaments go that was just a bonus. I think it would be cool. I was thinking to pay for tournaments, the kids that compete pay dues. After awhile and a tournament comes there is at least some money to fall back on. Also I noticed most of the tournaments are in New England and living in New England helps. Last thing, having member of paintball club on your colledge application cant look anything but good.

since your in the early stages of a club just try setup a club, look for store and field discounts if you ask around. Don't think too much about a highschool team, for now think about playing and setting a soild routine of collecting deposit for private group + rides + playing.

Once your able to get into a soild routine like that THEN you can maybe concider sending 3-5 guys to a tournament and have them represented as a school team. Entry fee could be paid for thru fundrasing while paint they should be able to buy themselves.

The second goal besides routine playing and getting new players into the sport. Tournaments is one thing, but getting new players and actually MAKING paintball a huge hit at your school gives paintball itself and your club a much larger effect. Talking about gear, going to events, showing dvds, it can really attract a lot of new players. I myself organized my club to go to NPPL huntington beach and prob HB and PSP Pomona next year. It was great, opened the eyes of a lot of club members on what highly organized paintball could be.

so base of the club = discounts from local fields and store, then goal one is routined playing, goal two is getting new people into the sport.

Goal three then should be organized playing and sponsorships. My club doesn't have much of a sponsorship (use to be a field sponsorship but not anymore because they shut down) but we still have a Empire discount sponsorship. It's hardly anything, but just the idea that we can say we're Empire Sponsored sounds really nice :]. If we tournament then we can prob slowly get more sponsorships as we go along but im stll on the second goal.

It's just my personal goals and experience has a club founder. We're in our first year too =].

Thats a great idea.... I think I'm going to start up a club at my school(Douglas County High School). We have about 2000-2500 kids here and I know at least 60 play paintball.

you should also look for sponsorships from a field and stores that sell pb equipment
ask who is spearheading it in the schoolboard for permission, he can use that to help ease the "man we have to pay for this too" feedback from naysayers

Sounds awesome. There's not enough dedicated players where I live to do that though. It blows.

Well I came prepared and basically had one page personal statement about the club, who we are, what we do, rules we apply to, goals, and what we what to attend (Nppl and PsP events). Ontop of that i had i dunno 5 pages on paintball and paintball safety? Then made a application for club members and attached to that page was a code of conduct.

If you have a large # of paintballers then its better, easier to start off and organize. Myself it was pretty much just my team and I so about 7-8 people starting the club. Although we did have a lot of backbone support from the top ranked students in the school ;]. We slowly teach people what paintball is nowadays, got like 4-5 people to really start to put money into i and hey thats a start =].

As for teachers I have 1 offical sponsor which is my Ap Us history teacher (hes a surfer so hes into 'extreme' per say, sports. I do have a extra sponsor which is my piano teacher. Found out from him that he use to play in his college days with those old school semis in the woods. It's surprisingly who you would end up meeting that plays paintball one way or another.

Dunno have more to say but I can't remember it at the moment, 3 hours of sleep=me=tired
