How about calling it "Stealthing"?
Ok so mention Sniper and Paintball in the same sentence and everybody will split off into two sides. The anti-"There are no snipers in paintball"-sniper side and the Pro-"I'm a paintball sniper"-sniper side.
Everybody knows that to be a "real life" (NOT paintball) sniper you have to be good at concealment, stealth and shooting LONG distances. Since EVERYBODY knows that all PB markers shoot basically the same distance REGARDLESS of ups then that eliminates the third part of being a "sniper" in paintball but what about Stealth and good concealment? Both are excellent skills when playing scenario/woodsball games.
So here is what I propose:
Instaed of saying "I'm a sniper!"
or
Hey there IS Sniping in paintball
Lets call it "Stealthing"
Aka "I'm a Stealther"
Thoughts?
Ideas?

Paintball is becoming more and more commercialized and as such, it is becoming more and more speedball. There is no stealthing in speedball. That being said, in your local woodsball games you can call it whatever you want to and leave it at that.

Wouldn't it be closer to being considered "Stalker" though.

You can call it "stealthing", sniping, recon element, or even crazy unlce bob. That is the great thing about this sport. There is something for everyone. There is woodsball -- the genesis of all paintball; scenario (hell here you can even be a wookie, zombie, alien maurader, or a Russian resistance fighter depending on the scenario); and speedball -- the commercial face of paintball.
So don't get hung up on terms. Just go out and play.

I'm not sure the new terms help anyone.
Do some paintballers use tactics that military snipers use? Sure.
Do military snipers use paintball guns for training? Sure.
Are paintball guns the same as firearms? no.
Is paintball the same as warfare? no.
But paintball is a reasonable simulation of combat. "Sniper" is a reasonable word to describe the tactics utilized by some players.
But, like the term "gun", it is a loaded term, and TOO OFTEN MISUSED by newbies who think that calling themselves "sniper" will make them seem cooler.
So, who cares?
People who use sniper tactics properly, do so because its a hard style of play to master, and won't give a crap what people think about it.
People who are newbs, and think they are snipers.... well... they won't know enough to give a crap.
So it doesnt really matter.

for one, not too many peeps like saying stealther or such b/c it does't sound right. And you really can't call it stealthing b/c the only time u could use it is in scenario or woodsball, and if i'm not mistaken, that is the point of the game, to stay concealed. Scenario is a little different. but regular speed/ctf/x/ball there is basically no way to stay concealed unless you are in the back, then you are considered a back man

Paintball isn't primarly about stealth (unless you play woodland).

True-
For example, if I know the other team is going to pass through a specific area, I conceal myself on that route, let them pass, then pick them off one at a time while following behind.
Its a hard trick to pull off. It takes patience to let the other team pass without firing a single shot. Most players could not do it.
And its not really an effective tactic unless coordinated with a team, but people like myself do it for the CHALLENGE.
The military would call that sniping. But it doesnt really matter. Stalking is also great good term... and also has bad meanings as well.

Well, heres my .02, I think it gets called sniping because thats the easiest way to relate that style of play to someone new. Anyone thats played a while realizes all markers shoot about the same distance. If chrono'd properly. And a lot of people will laugh at "snipers" in paintball, till they play a woodsball game and get shot out by someone they didnt even see. I dont snipe, but where we play, camo is the only thing to wear. And if any speedballers doubt it, go play your local woods scene wearing your yellow dye jersey, youll realize quickly, camo seems silly at first, but being the only taget thats very very easy to see is no fun either.
