What is a shootdown?

what is a shootdown? is it just when the the gun reaches a high ROF and the reg pressure drops then the gun craps out?

basiacly. If the reg cannot keep up with the valve cycling you will start to see a drop off in pressure resulting in a drop in velocity called "shootdown"

yeah, txaggie basically got the basics of it... if you need more of an explanation though, there's tons of people on here that could probably write a page on it, so just ask...lol

It can be a combination of reg or tank.. Your Pure energy tank may be the source of shootdown as i have seen the stock ion regs work well at high ROF, Get yourself a Crossfire HP or something of the like.

Have you looked through some of the threads on PBn about shootdown on ions? .. liek changing out the stock macro for regular macro, taking out the filter in the reg, changing dwell.

yea, the tank reg can play a part in shootdown. ANY of the regulators can cause shootdown if it gives a spike or wobbles. Best way to fix shootdown is to relube the reg and make sure u have it built right.

and he likes the 1337 better so he switched back.

All regs have a flow-limit. Once you go beyond that limit, it simply can not keep up.
Most older regs were good up to 12-15bps, but most modern regs can run up to 20-25bps if they are in good condition.

Other things can cause shootdown:

CO2 itself causes major shootdown. That is the MAIN reason people use HPA.
Poor LP setups suffer from shootdown, when a bottleneck in the system prevents enough volume to reach the valve.
There is also design limitations. As guns travel faster, the bolt can not seal properly, and FPS drops as a result (a common problem for spoolers).
