Well ramping is basically when your gun's electionic board shoots more than you are pulling. Lets say you are shooting 13bps, it might raise it to say, 20. They make all kinds of ramping settings for certain boards. It is illegal in tourneys because of a few reasons.
1. Your not really doing the 20bps
2. People tend to get overshot excessivly
3. Its, uhh....Cheating?

With ramping, some people would say that it has damaged the sport of paintball. I would disagree.
Ramping is when the board/chip in your gun goes to a higher rate of higher than what you are actually pulling.
In the PSP (PaintballSportsPromotions), after 3 shots of semi-auto, the gun will go into a 3-shot burt and it will be capped at 15 bps. The 3-shot burst will expire after 3 seconds i believe.
In the NXL (National Xball League), after 3 shots of semi-auto, the gun will go into full auto mode until the trigger is released for 3 seconds i believe it is (correct me if im wrong). I think that the NXL with the full-auto mode is "cheap" because it takes to real skill of firing a gun, because if you can go full-auto, then all's you do is point and shoot, but dont get me wrong, shooting and playing are COMPLETELY different. All of the pro's have major game in order to get to the point where they are right now.
In the NPPL (National Paintball Players League, i believe), the mode is stright semi-auto. The BPS is capped at 15 bps.
Why there is ramping in the pro's league i couldnt tell you. I dont know why the use it, but all of them who play are the best of the best. The PSP, NXL and NPPL are all capped at 15 bps. There are some major penalities for going over the bps cap. Last season, Ryan Greenspan (I hope you know who he plays for...) was caught shooting 20+ bps and was suspended for a good amount of games.

is ramping not just another form of 3-shot burst.
after you pull the trigger in 3-shot burst,3 paintballs are propelled. so if you were to pull the trigger fast enough it will seem you are shooting full auto. bc the gaps in time where you are not firing would be filled with the 3-shot burst.
and if thats true, then 3-shot burst has been around forever.

^If you don't feel like readin' all that.
Pull the trigger a certain amount and the BPS "ramps" to the designated BPS cap.
BPS-Balls per second.

A couple of things Jordan....
1. Ramping is not a type of X-shot burst. It simple adds shots. More then likely it is smooth and quite noticable(by the sound...constant rate).
2. There is no time limit for either PSP mode nor NXL mode.
3. NPPL Stands for National Professional Paintball League.
4. NPPL is not capped, it is uncapped semi-auto.
But overall, you did a good job with explaining.

because people were using it anyways when the rules were semi-only, and you can turn it on and off at the touch of a button which made it very hard to catch them. It was getting so out of hand, they decided to just give them ramping. But on the other hand, they took away the 30+ bps and toned it down to just 15. That way everyone is shooting exactly the same speed.
i suppose it could be pretty dangerous though, i have all the debounce settings on my borg as low as they can go. if you pull 2 bps, it ramps to 14

I tried it with debounce on, still the same effect. Well actually you need to pull about 4.5 bps to get to 14 in reality, the bounce just "enhances" the effect The ramp activation point is 2 bps though, so without bounce you would still get 10-12.

rampin is something noobs use so they can actually shoot above 5 bps but now nearly everyone uses it, even i do i do not like it t all i think it takes skill out of the sport. i have played pball for about 7 years and liked it more when it took skill to be a back player. Since ramping has come about i have noticed no one plays nearly as aggrssive as they ust to and everyone shoots at the same speed. I think not all ramping is that bad but i think what should not be allowed is nxl ramping because it is so easy to use that i saw a 10 year old kid ramp perfectly fine his first time playing and he was using a dm5 with a tadao board
