Danger(s) of playing with a out of date tank?
what are some, if any, of the danger(s) of playing with an out of date tank? When you get a tank hydro'd do they physically change anything on the tank, or simply test its condition. Can you fail a hydro or do they do whatever is necessary to make it safe again. how much does getting a tank re-hrdro'd usually cost?

This is something I'm interested in getting a serious answer on as well. I mean, obviousely you shouldn't play with an out of date tank, but what exactly does hydrostatic testing entail?? What do they check for? I mean, with the high cost and slow turnaround time (better have a spare tank around) I can imagine there are plenty of people playing with out of date tanks. And why are some fiber wrapped tanks 5yr and some 3yr?

Any field or store that checks hyrdos will not fill the tank. And you won't get to play.
the danger of a out of date tank is that it could explode.
When they hydro it they take it apart and submerge it in water, testing how strong the tank is still. Tanks can last for 15 years then they must be destoryed.
If you fail a hydro your tank will be drilled into with a drill, to prevent you from using a unsafe tank.
$20-$40 usually.

Ya, if you posted this in the right forum, you would have noticed the sticky I have on hydro testing.
Yes, they won't fill the tank if they check for the dates.
Yes, they submerge it in water and fill it with water and they check how much water spilled out of the tank it's in to see how much the HPA tank expanded. If it fails, they usually cut the threads off so it can't be used again and drill holes in it like he said. ^
Of course the dangers are it exploding. Don't really have to watch for the burst disk blowing, that only happens if the tank is over-filled.

at my local field they allow you to fill your own tank, so they do not check at all for the hydro date. just wondering because my friend has been playing with a tank that has past its hydro by a couple months

That is only true for the fiber wrapped cylinders. Metal cylinders can go for as long as they pass hydrotest.
I would definately not recommend playing with a tank that is out of hydro. Chances are that it will be ok, but high pressure tanks arent something you really want to take a chance with.

well what about co2 tanks? They are metal and they also have a set date and they can no longer be used. I think its 10 years but am not sure.

The aluminum co2 tanks have an unlimited life. as long as they pass hydro test they are OK. I think the steel HPA tanks have a 24 year life.

Most charge 20-40 to hydro, if they charge 30+ though, you should probably look into buying a new tank and selling the old one.

If you are really interested, or bored silly, you can find the information in the DOT standards.

hydro doesnt change anything in your tank it just makes sure that it is safe for use ,if you fail hydro your tank is gone and you need to get a new one

That's the thing with CO2 tanks, It's usually cheaper to get a new tank instead of getting the old one re-tested.

would you suggest buying a used tank with a couple months left on its hydro? how likely is it for a carbon fiber tank that is 5 years old to fail?

if the tank was well taken care of, then it will be fine. The only reason it would fail is if it has scratches in the finish, or if there are any dents. Even with minor scratches and small dents, it may pass.
Buying a tank that is close to hydro is fine, as long as they provide pictures so that you can see it is OK, and they should probably also lower the price a little since it is close.
