are there many misleading articles?

I was reading through a copy of Action Pursuit Games and I read a few articles that seemed more like paid advertisement than a genuine review of a product. Furthermore, doing my own study, I found them praising products or stores that others have had problems with. My second major issue is what is with all these retailers promoting the "sniper" package with that all important 21 inch barrel, aka the barrel that compensates for you know what. I've been on and off with paintball for a couple years but am pretty much new to the sport. Still I've spent weeks hopping forums and reading other peoples reviews, etc (hell, i'll spend hours reading about squeeges before I buy one, ask my wife). I don't have much first hand knowledge but I've tried to glean a lot second hand. Can a new player like me really trust reviews he reads in magazines or retailer websites or should he just lean on what the buddy next to him tells him?

It really depends on the mag, but yes it deos happen. APG has no balls to tell a company they suck, its not in them. On the flip side they are not going to diss a product that they are trying to sell and that they are getting money from, because thats bad bussiness. You diss their product, no one buys it, and they put their money else where because you arnt promoting their stuff right. They tend to downplay or not mention weaknesses and only mention the positive.

Its smart bussiness, get used to it. I dont, however, think that any one of your options are best suited to answer the question.

Apg think almost all products are great. The best way to find trustworthy reviews is ask people on a forum about something.

QFT, I remember when pbx gave a spider pilot like a 9.5 and I believe the nme got a 7 or something lie kthat, either way it was a bogus review of both guns.

APG is not that good a magazine IMO. It's real hard to find a unbiased review anywhere. PBreview is alright but some of the reviews are by people who either outright hate the product and don't even own it but make a review anyway, or people who have no clue how to operate the gear so they break it. Read through those and try to find the ones that tell both sides of the story.

yeah, apg isn't that good, if you're looking for a good mag, (this is going to cost you a little bit more) get faceful. I found their magazines really interesting and have good reviews. but for websites pbreview.com - Paintball Reviews and Paintball Fields I'd say would have to be the best. You can see what people wrote in for Pros and Cons and similar products used. That's the best site when it comes to paintball reviewing.

PGI = most entertaining

Facefull = most informative

Splat = girls

APG = noob mag

Paintball = scenerio

Edit: Forgot PB2X: Newbish woodsball and speedball

I have PGI cause i like it, but if i couldnt have that i would take face-full. Face-full deos have the best reviews, even though they do kinda do the same thing as APG, there are definitely not as bad.

And when a mag gives a spyder a 9 and a NME a 7, they are comparing it to each other, they are not comparing the spyder to a NME directly, but to things in its price range.

pb2x would be a good magazine for you. Its a mix of tournament and scenario/woodsball information. It's pretty good and i'd put it on level with facefull for the quality of it's content. Faceful is great, but it's truethfully targeted to the tournament baller, which you don't sound like.
