Thats a very general statement...why do you ask?
I'm sure mostly every member here knows about woodsball.

I've never played and was wondering about it. Is it different from regular paintball?

IMO it's a more laid back slower paced style of paintball. There really isn't anything called "regular Paintball". i play woodsball with friends when going to a field isn't really convenient or we don't feel like driving.
Woodsball doesn't require you to have a top of the line gun, i stick with a mechanical gun for woodsball because they are cheaper and you don't have to worry about keeping it in the best of shape when running through brush or crawling on the ground.
Rules are the same as pretty much all paintball games but flexable. You get hit then you put your gun in the air so people know you are out and you walk back to a "safe zone" "dead Box" until the game is over. You basically make up rules with your friends though. Some people count being shot in the marker/hopper as being out, some don't. Also try and establish an outline in the woods so people don't go out a quarter mile so they can flank around you.
Thats basically it, it's about having fun. Get creative if you want to.

It's usually an unorganizes event in somebodies backwayrd or something. That's not to say it's not fun.
make your own rules up but DO NOT exceed 300FPS and ALWAYS wear a mask and be safe. Other than that, be creative.

well here where i live we only play woodball..its fun but there are too many trees and bushes and sometimes the paintballs chop because there are too many little branches so its hard marking someone but its fun we play like there a path in the wood where at one end theire one flag and at the other end theres the other flag each team has to go get theire flag and bring it back..

You can start off with the most basic rules and guidelines and then add to the course as you get the time and money.
Tape off out of bounds
Add bunkers made of cheap materials (crates, pallets, old tires, storage drums etc)
Develop the bases with dig-ins and burms
Clear areas of excess brush to make playable
...and when the course starts to get nice you all get into speedball and abandon it for some other new players to discover. Hehe, j/k

Hmm, im assuming SpecOps got to you, are you refering to positions such as sniper, light rifleman, medium rifleman, heavy rifleman, heavy support, and commander, or something to that extent?
to be honest i dont believe snipers exist in paintball, at least not the theory of 1 shot 1 kill from an unimaginable distance, but! That being said, i do believe(to some extent)that a sniper in paintball is someone who uses camouflage and stealth tactics to their advantage
Honestly any marker would do in woodsball, high ends or low ends but if your using a high end marker, your more likey to not get down and dirty and be cautious of every twig, but the low end, you probably would get in close and personal with the dirt and have more fun( since you arent to worried about damaging expensive goodies). If your serious about woodsball, id recommend a tippmann a5 or 98.. both are tanks.

Welcome to "Outlaw Ball"
Looking for fun, get treated like a criminal. Much like someone in the market for a prostitu -- nevermind.
Tippmann will never let you down. took a nasty spill the other day. Went to spin and run from a bunker and whoops my boot caught a rock sticking out of the ground and I literally SLAMMED into lovely mother earth. My Tippmann slammed as well. Picked it up, dusted it off, reattached the hopper, started shooting. Props to Tippmann (and AK) for making simple and unbreakable equipment.
Ions are also tough. I see a lot of guys out there with me that have an Ion and treat it pretty rough.
