martix agent has a point, you are just paying for a 98c with a little diff cosmetics and hopper that can't work with any other gun.

Just get a 98C, they're cheap and will shoot just as good as an A-5 and you can use the money you saved to buy a good hopper. That way you don't have a gun with a blender on the side (which is really the only feature of the A-5 that sets it apart from the 98C).

and a barrel! the stock 9.5" barrel is a joke, you could probably make a better one with a cylinder of aluminum and the right sized drill bit, for the price Id say J&J ceramic (16" max) they are light, cheap and get the job done

Yeah, just listen to everyone else and get the 98C. Like they said, the A-5 is only more expensive because of the cyclone hopper on the side. But, also get a new barrel like they also said. If you hear this enough, you will probably listen and go with what everyone is saying.

A-5 or X7
I would have to say the A-5 with a flatline would be the best option but it puts you over the $200 mark. Check out this website LC Paintball
They have the standard A-5 under $200. The X-7 is a little more but it's a package deal. Hope this helps.

Matrix, you seem to know the 98 Custom well. Could you or someone else give me an UNBIASED opinion of the pros and cons of the guns? Thanks! Also, give me some of the availible upgrades for each gun.

Also, a 16 inch barrel is about 25 dollars. I that a good length?

All Tippmanns are sturdy, quality guns. The 98 custom can use the fancy electronic hoppers or the basic gravity ones. I think what martix is trying to say is that once you get a different gun you can take the nice electro hopper with you and not have to buy a new one later. The A-5 has a force feeding loader built in, so even though it is better than an electro now, once you get a different gun you can't take it with you. The loading system aside the two guns are pretty comparable mechanically speaking. Obviously there are some differences also in the "body styles" There are loads of accessories for both markers, obviously since the A-5 is the newer model there will be more available for it, though certain things (barrels for instance) will usually work on both. Bottomline, both are comparable it's pretty much a matter of choice. Shop some of the accessories for both and try to build your "dream gun" and see which one works best with what you want in a gun.

I just ordered an A-5w/Response and a 14" J&J S2 Ceramic. I can't wait to get it and try it out next week. My friend has one and it rapes. I play speedball sometimes but my heart is in woodsball so thats why I got it. It is rugged, and has a good shot, plus the response gives it dec speed. Other guns like the Ion are good, but I'd have to buy a whole new tank and not many places around here fill N2 or Compressed Air.

I am seriously considering buying a Spyder VS1 just because.
$130.00 - $150.00, electronic operation w/ eyes and CO2 friendly.
This was just to address your comment on the Ion. Here is a seemingly comparable marker that can utilize your current CO2 tanks to avoid purchase of an HPA can.

To counter the tippman love a bit here:
There quality control has slipped, significantly. Of 14 new guns purchased for our rental fleet 4 months ago, 7-8 valves have already failed. The guns are maintained as well as, if not better than, most personal guns, and business is definitely not "booming" at the moment. The sad part is, we are fixing the new shells with valves that are 6-7 years old and still functional.
I am not a fan of the way tippman makes it's guns, they're overly complicated to take apart, and to long, but I can lay that aside when they are reliable. These new 98's are not reliable. In the same span of time, we have had maybe 5 out of 30 spyder clones go down, all of which where common o-rings that had warn. Those guns are all 1year or more old.
Take it FWIW, The newer 98's are having a lot of reliability issues.
If you want a bullet proof gun, go buy an automag(yes kaz, amazingly you can still buy them brand new....wow!!). They've always been more dependable and better built with the tippman, and will shoot every bit as fast.

That's part of it. When tippman split up not long ago(I understand that's where BT came from), the QC dropped.
It's a shame, cause like I said, those old guns are still ticking internally when the shells are to far gone..
