i really have mixed feelings about this, on one hand i think its nice to do something for the families but on the other, if i had lost a kid and then someone tried to hand me a bunch of money I would really think "are you really trying to hand me money that is supposed to make up for my child being dead?"
like child = money
for something like a natural disaster i think it makes sense as most families struck by one need to replace belongings but murder?

It could go to help with funeral costs and family travel; things like that.

ya but even then its like "you dont think i can provide for my child even though they are dead"?
really i think this comes down to a society that has been lead to the idea through the years that money solves all issues.

Isn't that the general idea behind the excessive malpractice lawsuits?

no but funeral costs aren't cheap. and who expects to bury their kid? do you have money saved up for that? agreed fundraising for a mass murder isn't the ideal thing, but it can help

Didn't mean to come off as I did.
I understand and support Huck's point - Money makes the world go round, and while it can't replace a human life - it is able to soften the blow of having to, not only mourn...but afford their situation as well. While we can't assume that they have family out of state - a funeral is no small expense, and not having to be reminded of it every time you pay a loan, bank note, etc. can go miles to help a person.
That being said - I also (in different circumstances) see Trbo's point about society accepting a buy-off principal. 3:10 to Yuma had that line about the military deciding what Dude's leg was worth... The excessive malpractice lawsuits that go "To Frivolity, and BEYOND!!"...driving up malpractice insurance costs, which drive up doctor's costs, which drive up insurance provider costs, which drive up your personal costs, which drive up wages which devalue the dollar in a society that really doesn't "make" anything...
Yes...I realize that 1/2 of my prior statement can't be backed... but I largely believe the principle

ya, i really dont think there is a good answer, try to help them out with money it is seen as replacing the child with money, dont help and you feel like you do nothing
but then again, none of us know these families, maybe the best thing is to just ask them what they need right now and try not to interfere with this hard time in their life to make ourselves feel like we are doing something to help
honestly if i knew them i would just ask them, if they said they need help with funeral costs then absolutely i would help but just walking up with a fist full of money assuming it is going to help...you could just be making things worse
