a rather interesting article...
i think its fun reading old outdated articles to see how people thought back then and what was going on. plus i like looking into pb history. look at this article from 1992:
http://www.warpig.com/paintball/arti...unkyguns.shtml
my favorite part is the last paragraph:
Quote:
|
YET TO COME- what does the future hold in store? Paintguns that replace CO2 with nitrogen and compressed air? The death of the pump paintgun? A semi automatic that really works in cold weather? Full auto paintguns? New technologies and materials that will make paintguns lighter, more durable, less expensive, more accurate, less likely to break down, less likely to break paintballs? We'll just have to wait and see!
|
for any slow people who fail to see the irony in that paragraph: it all came true.
edit: except for the death of the pump gun, although it is slowly moving in that direction. its all about bps now

"THE PAINTGUNS THAT NEVER WERE- beginning in the spring of 1989 and continuing through summer, advertisements for the "Destroyer" paintgun made a monthly appearance in Action Pursuit Games magazine. This state-of-the-art paintgun sounded too good to believe right from the beginning- but that didn't stop dozens of players from plopping down $450. each in a special "pre-issue" price. Just listen to this list of features included in the two page advertisement:
50 or 100 round positive feed drum magazine!
selector switch for semi or FULL AUTO!
precision honed, removable 14" barrel
adjustable sight
velocity selector switch for 210, 250, 290, 325 fps!
internal thermal heating system for cold weather play!
disposable 12oz CO2 tank!"

Interesting, I've never looked at these ads side-by-side.... notice the grip frame is slightly different, and the foregrip.
Paintball didn't quite progress like I'd thought it would. I didn't see electro guns coming, balloon fields, or the BMX-surplus clothes. I figured we'd have force feeders way ahead of what we've got now, full head protection, and still be a 16-and-over game.
Meh, things are difficult to predict. In 15 years today's stuff will probably be a joke.

I think the old '16-and-over' rule would never have gone far. Younger people would still play no matter what, so it wouldnt have a point.
but deffinatly, in 15 years my cocker, and every1 else's timmy's, impy's, bushy's, angels, and everything else out there will be considered 'old school', and everyone will be going, *sigh* "those were the good ol' days..." about today. Kinda sad when you think about it

^^Not gonna happen as fast as the blowbacks will.
Spyders and Tippies will be the figureheads of the "2nd age of paintball." You just watch- it will come true.

I remember that add. I also seem to remember, shortly after the release of the ORIGINAL Shocker (back in 1997 I believe), the company that had made the original Shocker announced it would release the "Warrior" - later called the "Cyber9000" paintball gun with all sorts of full-auto gimmicks. Lots of people paid a lot of money to preorder that gun - I have yet to see one.
