When sliding in to check someone, try to do a headfirst slide into the bunker in a "superman" style. Much less hits that way. Other than that, just be prepared to be hit....a lot. Also, when doing a paint check, try not to interrupt someone's "line of fire" by running through it. It ont make you or them happy.

lol, ive reffed and participated in tournies, and have never seen a ref superman dive into a bunker. just keep your eyes open, dont just stare at one guy, as to give his position away. and dont be afraid of gettin hit.

Timmygod's got the big one. Be creative. You don't have to hover over someone to paint-check them. Walk casually past them with your head stationary if you're not fully sure. Nothing's worse then getting paint-checked, then suddenly having two more lines of paint flying at you just 'cuz ther ref is at a bad angle.
Also, make sure your "out" calls make sense. If some guy is shot at while sliding up to a bunker, he's prolly going to have paint from his shoes to his shins. Make out a clear "spot" before you make the call.
This is most important, because once you make a call, stick with it.
Again, you don't have to walk upto some guy to check him, just 'cuz you hear two guys all "REFF! PAINT-CHECK THAT GUY! REFF! CMON!" (edit: lol paint-check without the hyphen gets the asteriks. dubbya-tee-eff?) This is sometimes a clever tactic to get the ref to point out the guy behind the bunker. Check him, but no need to highlight him for all to see.
Also, look out for people who might use you for cover. If you're stationary for long enough, chances are some guy might intentionally pick the bunker you're closest to, giving him an unfair advantage. Keep walking the side-lines, if you don't have anyone in particular to watch.

lol, i hear that shytkicker.
At the tourney last sunday, the refs would lay down on their stomachs in a position to moniter a certain player. Alot of times, players wont notice a ref layin on the ground. I've never ref'ed tournies, just alot of rec games. Everyone else pretty much covered all u gots to do

Well I just got back and let me tell you that stuff was FUN!! I got shot up a bit, but I was treated with respect and had one hell of a good time. Makes me look at my own playing a slight bit different! I even got a compliment from a team that I threw out for leaving the break early. They were pissed, but agreed it was the right call.. WOOT!!
I get to do it again in July!! What fun!
Thanks for the tips too, they really came in handy.

Wear a cup, don't hover over the same player, and I suggest off the break you lay down and watch your zone very tight. Also, make sure you check packs REALLY good, shots can get hid in there quite easily.
