Definitely a yes on both of those topics. Keep water, a first aid kit, and some form of communication (cellular phones, landline phones, etc.) nearby.

Don't just bring bottles of water either, unless you're bringing an entire case. Bring a big water cooler like sports teams use; you'll drink more water that way.

Something To Consider
Something else to consider when putting together your own field are the legal ramifications. We're in the process of putting together a speedball field at my in-laws house. It's a mix of inflatables and solid bunkers. It's not an "open to the public" field. Just a place for the group of guys I play with to play at.
One thing that will definitely be in place before anyone plays on it is a waiver. The guys I play with are all friends, but I'm not about to open my in-laws up to civil liability. All it takes is someone stepping in a gopher hole that no one noticed and blowing out a knee or finding something to cut themselves on and there's a good chance you could be hearing from that person's lawyer.
Waivers: your best friend if you're the one on the hook.

...and don't forget to bring a towel, some sunscreen, extra batteries, a flashlight, canned food, four blankets, a fire extinguisher, HAM radio, and a compass.
It's just junkyard paintball with him and his buddies. How did anyone get the impression he was thinking on a commercial level?

I know that he's not talking about doing things in a commercial sense. However, if you think that someone won't take the opportunity to sue you if it's there, you're deceiving yourself. I understand that he's probably playing with his friends. The group I'm playing with is made up of friends. Some I've known for years, others I've only known for a few months. I'm playing it safe and protecting my in-laws (whose land we're putting the field on). Better safe than broke.

Better safe than broke AND friendless -- you are right. A waiver is a great protection measure. I was just having a go.

Hehe, I kind of figured you were prodding at him a bit. The sad thing is that you have to have something like waivers even when playing with friends. Such is the lawsuit-laden world we live in.
Oh well, it's not stopping us from whipping up our own field. After doing the math, we figured that between not paying field fees and buying our paint in bulk from the paintball store we could save between 25-30 dollars per person every time we played. That's a good thing, because we need to recoup the $400 in netting we're gonna have to buy.
