Play Rec?
Speedball? How often you play? Can you fill a Nitrogen or Co2 tank near your house?

i like spyders as starter guns. Spend the money on a e-spyder and a decent electronic hopper. Splurge on the mask (seriously, the cheap ones are uncomfortable and fog easily!)

I agree with Bobdie, just dont get a spyder, for your first gun get a 98 custom pro, i think it a e-gun.

98 custom pro is not an e-gun. The "pro" add a drop forward, a double finger trigger and a 11" barrel. I think spyders are great choice to begin, they are easier than Tippmanns to clean, and are easy to understand how they work.
How much will you spend on you complete kit ? (You'll need a tank and a mask...)

see i don't like tippmanns as starter guns b/c they cost more and are heavier and slower.
A spyder is just as reliable and cheaper.

Go with the spyder over the tippman. They are smaller, lighter, and pretty cheap used. Plus with an e trigger they can get pretty fast and as the above people said, they are easy to clean. VERY easy.

Get a Tippmann. Maybe a 98c, or an A5. If you want a mil-sim look, get a Spyder MR2.

My spyder tlr was my second gun and it is very nice.even stock they can hold their own against highend markers.i dont care what any body says , spyders can be a very good gun.as you go on and want to mod your gun, pickups come easy and cheap and you can find the triggerframes compattable with other spyders such as youcantseemee's e-99 avant,.

My first two guns were both e-spyders and they were great guns. I've used Tippmans before but my spyders were easier to use and clean. Plus like the others have said, they can work just as well as some of the other guns out there. Mods are easy to find and extremely easy to install. Just get an E-hopper and a great mask. I would recommend getting an aftermarket barrel & bolt as well. Something simple like a CP for the barrel, and a Delrin bolt would be fine. Good luck!

heyy, if you are getting really serious about the sport I would save your money and get a gun in the 300- 400 range they are kinda like high end guns without alot of ups but are still pritty nice guns, i would recomend the mini I am getting mine really soon and they are really easy to work with in speedball

He's starting off fairly NEW! I'd highly recommend the SPYDER SONICS PRO KIT (you can get it at Dick's Sporting Goods.) They shoot very very straight, can be clean and reassembled in less than 5 minutes tops, very reliable. I would buy a different mask though. We have 3 of these for guys that like to come and play with us on weekends so the guys don't have to buy equipment. We have had them for 2 years now and have not had one break yet. I own a 98C, damn that thing is a pain in the ass to maintain. I am anal about cleaning my guns after everytime I play and that thing just takes way to long.
My 2 cents. DO NOT BUY AN ION UNLESS YOU PLAN ON SPENDING ABOUT $600 bucks on AIR TANK, HOPPER AND WHAT NOT.
