Red face Reg Threads on Ion

Yep thats right, more locked threads on the Ion. At first I felt kinda sorry for all the people it happened to ya know, how often do threads on a reg lock? Yea well mine did and im kinda down about it. It's stuck about 2/8 in. left to go in. It will twist a TINY bit either way but thats it. It slid on nice 'n easy until 2/8 inches in, then just stopped. I tried to unscrew it and check the screen(I had a few attempts before that and each time I felt a little resistance and it was the filter getting a little caught in the threads so as soon as I felt that i unscrewed it, then I flipped the frame over and screwed it in so that gravity would keep the filter out of the reg's way) and it just stuck. So now I have tried wrapping rubber around the reg and using a wrench but that hasnt worked and i cant really think of anything else..... any suggestions or tips?

have you hit it with a hammer yet?...its not really effective at solving the problem, but its a great stress reliever.

maybe drip a little iol in the crack and work it. others have had to just use brute force to get them out.

take it apart and put it in a vise?

something like that... theres a few people who forget that theres a screen filter on top of the reg...and when they put the reg on, it gets bound up. its not usually the threading

yeah, most cses over at teh nation have been from people forgetting about the screen filter, or just plain manhandling the regs.

if you delicatly screw/unscrew, everything would have been fine

Part of the issue on the ION is that it is not anodized. the threads on a standard marker are anodized just like the rest of the gun, Anodizing gives the metal a tinsle streangth of Stainless Steel. These being powder coated there is a chance for the threads to seize. Smart Parts is now installing all regs on the ION with anti-seize. The hardened threads from anodizing provides a "slicker" surface and maintains a more true form under use. (ever try an take a rusty nut off a bolt?)

Labbmonkey, if you can still screw the reg back in, here is what I would suggest. apply anti-seize to the exposed threads and then tighten the reg back up, then loosen to the point that it binds. keep applying anti-seize until you get the compound on the troubled spot. once you get it out, apply some to the rest of the threads on the reg, and reinstall. Smart parts will warrenty the marker for this, but I know you would rather have it than send it in. at least feel better knowing that all they would do is apply the same compound. any auto parts store will have it.

*edit* I had another thought also, to get it back in you can take a wrench to the adjustment portion of the reg, (big wrench, not the dinky one that came with it) just make sure it fits good, and you should be able to tighten the adjustment all the way, that will give you a good amount of force to screw the reg back in. just remember that it is now all the way open, and to unscrew all the way before you apply air.

if it's the stock reg... i'd take a wrench to that mug... file down some of the Powder or anno in 2 parts across from each other, then wrench it out. Then use the cover to hide the scratches

i was screwin it in upside-down so the filter wouldnt get in the way wen i gave it the fatal last try. we got it out yesterday afterschool with a vice grip and rubber, but the reg threads or totally stripped, the asa's thread r fine. so im just gonna get a new cp reg. but i think sp messed up on the reg threads cuz they didnt look like they fit the asa too good.

Edit: there is NO WAY the reg cant go back in there, if i can get a good pick ill show u guys, on one part of the reg threading it stripped it pretty good.

That's wut exactly happened to me! I was screwin in the reg when the air filter got caught. Then it just started grinding against the threads till they were locked. Ended up having to send my ION to Smart Parts to get it fixed. Think they'll put anti-seize on the threads?

I sold an impulse locally last night, and the guy wanted the black duckbill that was stock on my ION. I took the macro fitting off and put a swivle on and just by removing the macro fitting the threads were stripped on the asa. There was a major metal bur that protruded from the threaded opening and a solid ring of metal where one of the threads actually stayed on the fitting, ( I am sure that is what stripped the threads on its way out.) The fact that there is no ano on this gun is going to make all of the threads very soft and fragile. Be very careful when placing or removing parts. I am starting to think Medic has the right idea, leave this puppy bone stock!

i did the same thing....called SP and gave em hell. they were like "are you sure they are stripped? cuz we thread them ourselves, and it just looks like raw metal." i asked the dude what kind of idiot do you think i am....he had no answer.

but they are sending me replacements
