ION is breaking

Well ok, one of my friends has recently purchased an ION. He also has a PMI 68/45 and a HALO B w/rip. After he shot about 500 paintballs he had a leak. He said it was coming somewhere near the top of the reg(by the gauge) so he then disasembled the gun, cleaned, relubed and checked all parts. When the problem still was not fixed he took it to the local store where he got it and they put some more locktite around the gauge and the problem was fixed(it worked fine at the store). So he got home aired it up and shot maybe 10 shots when he realized the gun was running at around 210 psi and the balls were only going 10 feet or so. He also had just refilled is tank. He does not know what the problem is and would like to be able to solve something without having to drive to the pb shop. He also has only had the gun for about 5 days. Do you have any idea as to what may be happening?

Hmm.. I would wonder if the gauge isn't faulty and giving you a false reading. Basically the ION should work just fine at 210 psi. I would take it back to the shop and have them look at it.

the reg pressure should be 180 max. your gauge may be broken...but i dont know that for sure...something else that may be off is the dwell setting.

so, to check if the gauge is broke, you need to turn the reg to "0". you do this by screwing the black nut at the bottom of the reg all the way in till it touches the reg. this should cut off all pressure from the reg. air up the marker. check the gauge, if it is not reading "0" it is definately broken, and you need a new one. if its broke, install a new gauge, and follow the rest of these directions. if it aint broke, just follow the rest of these directions.

now, start turning up the reg pressure by twisting the black nut "out". keep going till you get to 140ish psi registering on the gauge. dry fire the gun about 10 times, to "equalize" the reg pressure. turn it up to 160ish. dry fire again, and check to see if it still reads at 160ish. repaet this until you get it to read about 160-170 after dry firing. this pressure should allow you to be near "the speed limit" (280-290 fps).

now, load up some paint and see if it shoots. if it dont shoot what you imagine to be 280 fps (or so) or is just lobbing balls out, you need to try adjusting your dwell. below is directions that i copied from another thread, for setting dwell if you have a QEV. it still works basically the same, its just the the numbers will be higher. (with a QEV, your dwell will be around 10 -15, woiithout a QEV, your dwell normally should be around 45-55, so just start 40 and go up from there)

It’s a good idea to count the dwell beeps on the way down, just to give you an idea where the marker was set stock. ( I have seen 52, 47, 58 ….) Now once the dwell is lower all the way, pull the trigger to save settings. Next step is to set the dwell. Install air at this point, if not already installed and check for leaks. (fix any leaks before continuing.) Set the board to “raise dwell” and raise 5 clicks from bottom. Pull trigger and try to test fire the marker. The marker may or may not cycle properly at this setting. Continue to raise the dwell 5 clicks at a time until the marker cycles correctly. (if you get over 10 then the QEV may be installed backwards.)
Finally add a loader and some paint and head to a chronograph. You may notice some very erratic shots. (260 fps / 100 fps/ 300 fps) This is normal. Raise the dwell 5 clicks at a time until it shoots +/- 5pbs. Now you are in the ball park, Next is to set the inline pressure to get the correct FPS needed. For example, you are at 160 psi, and shooting 230 fps. Raise the inline pressure until you are shooting at 280 (260, 280, 300/ your preference really.)
At this point you are very close. (remember how many clicks you are at?) If it is back to being a little erratic, raise the dwell one click at a time until you are back to +/- 5 fps or so.
If it is still shooting consistent, lower the dwell 1 click at a time, until it becomes inconsistent. then raise back up one or two to get it set just perfect.

if this does not work, there is something else wrong, and get back to us with how things worked out, and we can go from there.
