no, it wont hurt the gun at all. the point of a tapeworm is to fix bolt stick. if you are firing and your bolt sticks forward, a tapeworm will fix it, thats its only purpose

Actually ive been looking into the smartparts impulse and recently read the owners manual, near the beggining there is an entire section on it.

And the quoting begins (I have edited out parts that do not have anything to do with the reasons it gives. For the manual and its full readings please go to http://www.smartparts.com/Manuals/Impulse.pdf)

"It is recommended that you do not dry-fire (fire without paint) your Impulse....Because of its low pressure design, the marker requires a paintball in front of the bolt to produce back-pressure, which makes the marker re-cock.....If the Impulse is fired without anything in front of the bolt, the bolt will remain forward
and allow air to continuously drain down the barrel."

So basically the manual advises against because of air leakage But it also says

"If you must dry-fire the Impulse, remove the barrel and place a rag over the front portion of the marker where the barrel screws into. This will simulate the paintball and create the required back-pressure to re-cock the marker."

Hope this helps

yea you can dry fire any gun and it will not hurt it, its the same this as shooting it but without a paintball nothing else changes, except for the noise it much louder.

The reason it says that is b/c You need a paintball normaly to creat back pressure in the gun so the air is blocked and air can go to the noid and let it go back.

I will explain

when you fire the impulse, And the hammer hits the valve, There is a big dump chamber. And without the Tapeworm, the air that the noid needs to move the hammer back is being sucked away by the valve empiting it out of the bolt. What a paintball does when it goes into the gun is give the air some back pressure so that the noid can have the air to move the hammer back

With a tape worm, All it does is pull out some of the air comming out of the Reg. and directs it right to the noid, So that you don't have problems w/ bolt stick

--Jerry

tl;dr Version:
It's ok to dry fire impy, IF your bolt sticks forward and drains air out, you need a tapeworm.
