First impulse, please advise

Ok, so I've sort of fallen into ownership of an impulse, which I plan on upgrading to be a nice backup gun. It's an '02 black non-vision, which really isn't a problem for me because I plan on adding ACE anyway. I've done some searching to see what some of the better upgrades are for the impulse, and this is the route I've been considering so far:

- Version 3 I-Frame
-WAS Equalizer board
- SP LPR (Yes, I know the ND is cheaper, but it's ugly)
- Vertical Adaptor w/ Sidewinder reg

I never was a Max-Flow fan, so I might have a horizontal one for sale pretty soon. I'll probably end up grabbing an impulse back for the freak set I have, but I wouldn't be opposed to purchasing new barrels if anyone has a better idea.

I'd like as much input as possible on this. I got the gun basically for free, so I'm willing to do quite a bit along the lines of upgrades. Let me know what you think about the ups I'm considering, and be sure to provide more feedback than "omg ____ sucks!" If anyone wants to post pictures of some cool/good upgrades, that would be nice too.

My main goals for this gun are for it to be a solid, reliable backup that consistently mows heads off.

they are all pretty much top of the line upgrades you could get.

I'd recommended buying the internals first, all ND stuff, deffinitly increases overall performance. Especially the bolt, get that first, then like the valve, and ram, and hammer. And a blade trigger, i like my ND magno.

The I-Frame is awesome, I say go for it, but in the mean time a blade trigger is a great idea, deffinite improvement over the stock trigger.

The Evil LPR is pretty bad, don't even bother getting it.

Either the ND, or the SP LPR, personally the SP because it's basically the same as the ND but it looks better, and is way smaller.

WAS is also great, recommend that too.

Why did you think of upgrading the VA before everything else? You don't really need to upgrade that, especially if you're getting an LPR, and the stock one is fine.

You already have a horizontial Maxi? well if you don't really want it, then ya, sell it, and get something like a SW, or a CP, something sweet like those.

The Freak would be a good barrel kit for the Imp, they are pretty sweet with the SS inserts, and look good on Imps. And you only really need 3 bores: The .689 and the 2 around it will be fine.

There's also the feedneck, a clamping low-rise is good, liek the CCM.

And also the bottomline setup, you can do something with that.

best point in there. This thing is trash, and i've seen them brake down first hand. If you dont like the look of the ND, then get the SP its tighter and works tyhe same. Please do yourself a favor and dont buy the respirator, cause you'll end up having to pay for 2 lprs.

Thanks for a really helpful post! I half expected the first two or three responses to be some one-line attempt at being funny.

I didn't research the internals as in-depth as I probably should have. Thanks for the heads up; I'll check out all the ND stuff. Is the New Designs Equalizer bolt better than the OTB blind bolt? I've seen people raving about both of them all over the place.

Thanks for letting me know about the Evil LPR. I've always seen good products from Evil, but if it's that bad, I'll get the SP reg. First post edited!

I'm going to pass on the magno/blade trigger. I'm going to get most of this stuff pretty much all at once, so it would be kind of a waste to have with the I-frame coming in at the same time. As far as the board is concerned, is there really anything that competes with WAS? I know there's the Genesis board, but that seems kind of outdated nowadays.

The inlet hole on my VA is the small size, for an air line fitting. Moving to a vertical reg will require the larger inlet. As for the bottom line, it's going to be the standard, run-of-the-mill Unimount setup (hence my WTB unimounts thread ).

I've never liked the horizontal Max-Flow because it's chunky and makes the gun way too tall for my taste. The impulse is a pretty tall gun to begin with, so I don't need a huge reg adding to that. Speaking of the reg, what's a working horizontal max-flow in good condition worth these days?

Thanks pizzer, and the rest of you start giving me some feedback!

County paintball or who ever makes the Python impy makes a REALLY Nice Vert reg adaptar

Basicly, it comes w/ the SP's LPR, and a guage on the Vertical ASA instead of having to retrofit one on the back of the gun that looks real ugly, It's REALLY high flowing, and a overall VERY nice set up

as for valves, if ur gonna get an LPR, leave the stock valve in, Stock valve is the BEST one to use w/ an LPR. trust me

Other then that... Think of getting WAS board, Ndz bolt, Ndz hammer assembly w/ slick shot ram and Mid weight hammer, Some kinda custom Trigga frame, CP reg or w/e fits ur taste, CCM No or low rise, and ne other cosmetic shiza u might want

Ya, they turned out to be hype.

New Designz internals/parts to concider...

- Equalizer Bolt
- SS Bolt Pin
- SS Mid-Weight Hammer
- Slik Shot Ram Shaft
- Ram Housing/Hammer Cap
- Ball Detents
- R.I.P. Valve (I don't have any experience with them with LPRs but you can take bunkertime's statement in to concideration)

And about the VA, I forgot you had the Horizontial Max-Flo.

Another board is the KM2 Predator Morlock, only $119, no ACE I think, but it takes permanent modification to install it. You can get it with reflective, or break beams though, and it is better than WAS.

very true. the equalizer kills it hands down.

and for the frame (trigger) basically if you like 90* frames (hold any spaceframed angel) then go for otb, if not the i frame will do you good.

Ok, the impulse came in a few days ago, so I'm ready to start working on it. It's no wonder the guy I got it from though it was broken, though. He had snapped the power switch off the board (stuck "on" forever, or until someone solders on a new switch) and installed the valve backwards. The ram/bolt was only able to move halfway forward, do to the outrageous amount of Dow33 inside the ram housing. Both ball detents were broken, and one was stripped to the point that I had to use locktite on an allen wrench to get it out.

It seriously took me about 5 minutes just to get all the Dow33 out of the marker. I plan on replacing all O-rings, as well as the solenoid gasket. Are there any other steps I should take/check as far as cleaning goes that only an Impulse guru would know?

I'll get some pictures soon, and maybe start a before/after thread or something of the like.

Wow, that's terrible dude.

Check out the ultimate sticky thing. The ZDS paintball site is very nice. Has alot of in depth info on the Imp, and how to fix problems, clean it correctly, and all that.
