"The Walls of Troy" coming to Arizona

By Jonathan Foust

The Greek fleet bobbed in the bay below Troy as the banners of the great army flapped in the breeze. Hordes of battle-hardened Greeks sat crouched in the oppressive heat staring at the marble wall of Troy. Black clouds of smoke choked out the drying, cracking rays of the sun as plumes of greasy cloud rose from the fires within the walls.

Achilles, the champion of the Greeks, strode toward his general and leader, Agamemnon. The general had laid claim to Achilles’ servant, Briseis, who now doted on her new master. He loathed this war, and lost no love for his leader, but he had lost a dear friend to a Trojan blade and his heart called out for revenge. “When will we move, General?”

Agamemnon looked out from under his crested helm at the great bulwark before him. These walls had been assaulted how many times in the last ten years? How many times had he given this order? How many good Greeks lay buried in this foreign soil? The only answer that he could manage was, “Soon”

Within the walls stirred Paris, the prince of Troy. His polished armor bore only a few scratches and dents, fresh testaments to his visits of the battlefield. He held his helmet under one arm as he stared out at the ocean of Greeks before him.

“Master,” came a soft strong voice from behind him. It was Hector, the brave and powerful champion of the Trojans. “Master, they are preparing for another assault.”

Paris stared in wonder at the blackened army beneath the onyx sky. An ocean of Greeks stood ready to batter his walls once more, the once smooth marble now pockmarked by pick, sword, and missile.

“Advise the men to prepare,” said Paris. “See to it that Helen is still in a safe location.”

“It will be done, my Prince.”

“General Agamemnon,” Odysseus, the crafty engineer called from the crowd.

“Odysseus,” the general replied. “What have you come up with to break this stalemate?”

“I have drawn up a plan, General… but it will take time to construct.”

Agamemnon looked up at the great white wall once more. He hoped that soon he would be seeing it from the other side. “Make your preparations, trickster. Meanwhile… Briseis, sharpen my sword. This army attacks.”

Golden comets of Greek Fire streaked from the siege engines toward the coiled city. Under a charcoal sky, amid the snapping and cracking of banners, as a black rain of arrows bled out from the walls of Troy, the Greeks charged once more.
