how reliable is an external hardrive?

my dad gave me a 40gb hardrive, and bought some case for it to plug in externally.

i plugged it in, but it showed up as USB Mass storage device. it used to be a secondary internal hardrive in my dad's old computer.

but im putting about 25gb worth of music on it, i don't want to risk loosing it.. so how reliable is it? i just copied everything over, i just have to press the big old delete button on my old folder.

should be like any other hard drive, unless you plan on peeing on it, in that case it might not like you and commit suicide.....

Play the files through the new HDD. If it plays clearly, you should be fine.

It'll be fine, as long as you make sure you don't drop it or knock it over or something while it is reading/writing. If it's reading or writing, and gets impacted, you run a decent chance of corrupting some files, maybe even messing with your low-level formatting (Which is a bad thing.)
