Desktop computer

First:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300, Intel Core Duo E6400 or AMD 64X2 4200+?

Which is first/second/third? Is one of them the best as far as store bought computers go?

My uncle is looking for a new home computer. He's got a Dell now thats lasted six years. He was thinking about going Dell again, but was asking me what's good out there now. Any ideas?

(Keep in mind he wants to go store bought, not parts built.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo is the finest CPU on the market today. As for which of the three is best as far as store bought computers, if you can get the E64 over the 63 for a reasonable price, do so. However, I would advise against AMD.

I don't want to hear any nay-sayer's horse-**** on this, either.. Dooms asked which he should get, not whether AMD is better than Intel or not so leave it for the Vs. threads..

The core 2 duo's performance is above that of any processor to date, not to mention the revolutionary tech that the geeks are always going on about. Basically, you've got four Pentium 4's in the amount of space designated for one Pentium 4. Basically, take a single cour P4 now.. Turn on MSN, winamp, surf a **** site or two, rip a CD, Download something P2P, and start playing Half Life 2 while Updating Battlefield 2142 and you just might be using %100 of your cores..

If this thing don't fly with FSB's that fast I don't know what will

I would recommend AMD as it is cheaper but a top notch processor non the less. It does run cooler then the Intel's. Also the AMD is Windows Vista compatible for when it comes out. With all the things he can do he will never run that CPU at high volumes and AMD has always been mroe bang for the buck! You surely can build a nice AMD system for maybe 400$. If not less.

You know, a few friends of mine don't think it's a big deal to drive drunk because they've never hit anything.. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Don't buy Vista.
Don't Buy AMD.
Go Intel.

Haha...okay.

A few reasons why you should not buy Windows Vista:
  • No reason to upgrade other than snazzy effects

If you are using Windows XP you have absolutely no reason to upgrade to Windows Vista other than the one I just said. If you want to throw away 300+ dollars on a barely-different OS and support a corporate giant that is trying to take over the world...have at it. I don't support your decision, though.

If you like the snazy effects I should have you know that many Linux distrobutions have comparable, IF NOT BETTER effects available and they are quite easily configurable now. You know how much most of these distros cost? Nothing.

If you are using XP use it until new games and programs no longer support it. There is no reason to spend so much money just because Microsoft wants you to.

NOTE: I am not advocating pirating windows. I'm advocating avoiding Windows Vista.

Ok, so now: Which computer?

It seems like the three big names that have relitively afforable Core 2 Duo computers out are HP, Dell, and Gateway. I've got an HP laptop and so far I love it, but what would you say? Out of those three which would be the way to go?

Dooms, I'd say it comes down to the application of the system. Will it be a gaming system or not?

If yes, I sincerely suggest you do NOT go with Dell. Years of personal problems have soured my taste on that company permanently.

Not really, it's main purposes will be:

1. Word Processor type stuff
2. Online bill paying
3. Simple games (casino games/online poker)
4. Burning CDs/DVDs (music)
5. Internet

Nothing crazy, pretty much the normal home computer stuff. He's got a Dell now, but he isn't really a big fan of them anymore. He's had a few problems in the past and Dell was less than helpfull.

Nah, if it was for me I would just build it myself. It's for my uncle who wants something store bought. (That way he gets the support and the warrenty along with it.)

I can vouch for gateway. My family has owned 4 gateway computers and every single one was is great. They dont load them with too much crap like some companies do and they perform fine.

The biggest thing about them is customer support. I have called at like 2:00 AM for tech support and been connected right away to someone who spoke amazing english, and wasnt just reading off a website. He actually knew how to help me without consulting the standard tech support guide. I have had similar experiences every time I needed help, which has been rare.

I currently own one of their tablet PCs, I can write on the screen with a stylus. Its new technology, and kinda buggy, but they have helped quickly every time i've had the slightest problem.

A+ to Gateway.

HP or Gateway

In response to ...uumm Tony D here:

Everything stated in these articles are already based knowledge I know about Microsoft. Microsoft runs a pile of crock with all this BS for everyone to enjoy. EULA, its been stated since Windows 95 you are not allowed to have a more then 1 windows key (stated as EULA) on any computer. Such as having 2 systems using same windows key. Microsoft has cut support for Windows 98 about 3 weeks to a month ago. Which means no backwards compatibility. I know all of Microsoft's tricks and so does anyone in the IT or Networking business but that doesn't stop us from using Microsoft. I'm a gamer and if Linx would support PC games I would move to it in a flash but they dont.

Perpetual Upgrading.
That makes me think of Novell and how good a Novell server was. Did you know that Novell use to run 90% of the market. Imagine how Microsoft felt about that, they came out with Windows NT (Not There) and 2000 which gave them back the industry while Novell didn't know what to do because they didn't need to upgrade there software. It was working great.

Hostile treatment of customers
When you run a multi-billion if not trillion dollar company, who cares about 1 user? Even tho he does not get the support he needs it will not stop him from using Microsoft.

I could go on about everything posted in the 3 articles but here is the conclusion. No matter what you use, may it be Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista. You are still a product of Microsoft and that is all they want. Just so you know I will get a copy of Windows Vista but I have no intention on buying it. For the normal user he might want Vista because it is the last Operating System that came out and he might think its the safest and such. What more can I say? Microsoft uses us a puppets but we let it happen.
