what did I just do?

I think I just royally screwed myself in the ass.

We have an older PC that is used for family. It is the family computer. Well, it only has 256RAM (its some old AMD processor) and I wanted to be able to upload pics fast and easy for the sandwich thread I planned on making. Well, after adding a stick of 512 to my computer, I turn it back on and hear beeping (monitor showed nothing). I get kinda nervous so I tried to turn it off, but it would not let me. I had to unplug the computer. After this i take out 256 and try running 512 because I thought maybe it couldnt handle that much, and I find that its working. The windows screen loads and you can see the bar go across the screen. Shortly after (before you get to log on) the computer flashes a blue screen quickely and then shuts off. This cycle will repeat. I switched back to original RAM configurations and I get the same result.

Did I fry something on the family computer?

UPDATE:

The computer recognizes the new ram. I checked via Bios options and even when i switch up how much ram is in the machin,e the bios can recognize it. Also, there are no USB devices plugged in minus the mouse and keyboard. Nothing has been added recently, except Kodak software, which I am sure is not the reason to this crashing.

Please PBF, help me out.

Yeah, I tried it.

I took out an old desktop and re-installed on it, but I cannot find a working serial for windows media center edition (or windows professional 2002).

Pretty much I have three desktops that dont work. All I need is a freaking working OS. I think I will take a computer and possibly install linux? My mom is competely windows person. She doesnt do anything but check her email and do some browsing. Would she be able to use it? She is far from tech oriented.

EDIT: post count doesnt have to do with what year you came here, like the colors do..

Never knew that. Then again I have had 0 posts for like 4 years so I can see how I would be easy to miss. Comparison of Linux distributions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Take a look here and try anything that resembles windows if she doesn't like the look of it then switch to another. And for documents grab StarOffice for her.
