Windows Vista
What is so bad about it?
In the past, Microsoft has proven itself to be rather douchebagish. Blue Screen of Death anyone? Monopoly? Security holes?
Vista is preloaded with a LOT of useless crap. On my computer especially, there was a LOT of bloatware. Plus I HATE virus software. It slows my computer too much, and I dont download things that might possibly have viruses.
Once you get rid of the useless crap in vista (once you figure out how to find MSConfig and the Add/Remove Programs in a new and hostile environment), it hums.
I think it looks very sleek, and new, and it works great. This is the new standard OS, and its here to stay.

As far as technically? Maybe nothing. But just so you know, you don't technically own the software, even though you've paid for it. Sorry.
I have a lot of problems with Vista, but I think many of them stem from the EULA Agreement issues. I'll dig up the articles about it if I remember to.

Everybody hates ista before they try it. Yes, microsoft is a sleezball corporation. If you want the opposite of that, stick with ubuntu.
Personally I dont care that I dont technically 'own' the OS. Its on my computer and I'm using it anyways.

I don't care for the idea that you can spend $200 on an operating system and you only own the "right" to use it. Microsoft can take away that right whenever they see fit and you will be ****ed.
There are other ****ed up clauses in the EULA. I'll get on it.
But as I said, I don't like the OS for several reasons. It's using features (the snazzy eye-candy) that have been around for at least a couple of years, but it is done in a completely inefficient way that takes up a ton of space and hogs resources. One of my problems with Windows as a whole is that it's a resource hog and it doesn't know how to use anything; Vista only furthers this. The minimum "requirements" for Vista are absolutely ridiculous, especially when you consider that the OS is pretty close to the same as XP and 2000 but with a face-lift.

I have XP on all my computers and my brother has Vista on his new desktop. Vista is just different enough from the previous versions of windows to make it confusing to operate. Plus I can't run most of my old programs on it or I have to look for special drivers or patches, that usually don't work. Right now it's a PITA. Maybe in the future I'll get used to it and every thing will work nice and easy, but right now I have XP just the way I like it and I'll stick with that for a while until I'm forced into Vista.

I honestly don't think that microsoft will force people into Vista. What I think will end up happening is that microsoft will release a new operating system more similar to the ones previous to Vista because almost nobody I know is switching to Vista. Like you said, Vista is "just different enough from the previous version of windows to make it confusing to operate". Most people don't like change, so they aren't buying Vista.

i'm the only one out of four at my house that has XP on my school laptop(still got Ubuntu on the desktop). although i have a free copy of vista, i'd rather not do it. I see them have all these issues with drivers, and it asks them "Are you sure you want to do this?" all the time. Also, there's the wonderful "You do not have rights to do this" bull**** it dishes at them. No handy administrator login when you need to do something that requires the privileges, you have to log out, and jump through hoops to do something. I find no benefit in upgrading, so I'll just say forget it.

Just so everyone knows, You can change a setting that turns account control off. I think it's under security center in the control panel. As far as vista vs. xp, I currently have vista installed and there really aren't any advantages and it seems to have issues with some software. Other than that, It has been stable. I'm going back to xp though

WEll, honestly if your an enthusiast you will be able to find a way to fix it to your liking.
It took me about 20 seconds to disable UAC (the thing that asks you if your sure all the time).
Once I figured that out, and located msconfig, it was very similar.
I like it. I think the only person who posted a valid reason why Vista isn't good is Tony, and then again he seems to enjoy playing devils advocate with everything (intentional or not).

How do I turn off the notification thing that took you 20 seconds to figure out? I've been looking for like 5 minutes.

go to the control panel, then go to administrative tools, then go to services. find the part of vista you want to stop and disable it.

Go to control panel (classic view) -> security center -> Click the down arrow by "other security settings" -> Turn it off
