'splain me something..

I just bought a new cheap mouse for my brother's computer. It's a small, wired, optical mouse. It didn't come with any kind of driver software, so I wondered if it would work without a driver cd. I take it and try it on every computer in the house.

I plug the mouse into my Windows XP home edition laptop, it works.

I try it on my brother's XP tablet edition computer, again it works no problem.

I plug the mouse into my old, haven't updated in years, Win-XP professional laptop....again, it works within 5 seconds. No fuss.

Now I plug it into my Ubuntu Linux computer and, I'll be darned, it also works no problem.

Now I go to my brother's new Windows Vista computer, figuring it will work no problem. Well, after a minute of searching for driver, asking me to click stuff, searching for drivers again....it tells me it won't work.

I can't believe it. It works on all the old editions of windows AND Linux without even asking me to install anything, yet Vista tells me to screw-off. Maybe it's me, but I feel like there's something wrong here?

I'm really starting to not like Vista, it seems to make everything more difficult than it needs to be.

That's great.

I've used windows for years (all the way back to version 3.0), but I can see why people love Mac OS and Linux. They both beat the crap out of windows as far as basic functionality. Especially when compared against the versions of Windows that come with most computers. [The ones that come with so much prepackaged garbage that, right out of the box, they barely run.]

Strange, Ive used 3 different brand mice on my vista laptop and after about 5 seconds they work.

I took 20 minutes and customized vista to my likings and have loved it ever since.

I was going to say 'I think' people are afraid of change.

But its not even a question. People are afraid of change.

Microsoft IS going to discontinue XP support. Vista WILL be their new main OS.

So get used to it!

Can I inquire as to the make and model of said mouse?

It's a Verbatim Mini Travel Mouse. I also had a similar problem with a Canon printer. It wouldn't locate the drivers on it's own and it wouldn't accept canon's Vista drivers that I downloaded from Canon's website. I eventually just went out and bought a new HP printer, which did work with the Vista driver CD they gave.

Vista isn't absolutely horrible, but it seems to fight me with even the simplest tasks. It's starting to get annoying. I'm not afraid of change. I went from 3.0 to 3.1, windows '95, to windows '98, to XP with few problems. Vista however has been kicking my butt.

Along the same lines, I just started using Ubuntu Linux not to long ago and so far it's been head over heals better than windows. Even on a 5 year old PC it was stupidly easy to load, runs smooth, worked with the large majority of my devices right away, and it's very stable. It actually reminds me very much of the earlier versions of windows, without all the freezing and rebooting. Plus it was completely free. If only all games and programs could be used on Linux I would switch all my PCs over.

There isn't an overwhelming number of games available on Linux, but there is some strength in the area. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is still one of the most played online shooters available. IdSoftware, maker of some well known titles like Quake and Doom, is known to port most of their games to Linux, and they will be doing the same with ET: Quake Wars.

It might not be simple to get every game running on Linux, but in many cases, it's possible. Since before I even switched over, about two years ago, I remember seeing HOWTOs and FAQs on how to get World of Warcraft working. More recently I've seen more success with getting Counterstrike and Steam running.

Right now vista is having a lot of trouble with drivers and various other things. I installed it on my recent build and its OK, but it took a long time to get my video card working right, and there are little problems every now and then. A lot of people are having problems with printers(usually a couple year old printers)

Overall it isnt a bad OS. I remember there being problems with xp when it came out. I am sure it will get better as they start to release service packs and such. Ill still stick to os X for daily use tho...
