Getting a Tippy 98
I may be getting a 98 from a friend and this will be my first gun. I have been told that the stock barrel is junk and Im not sure what he currnetly has on it (it could be stock). What barrel should I get? When I have played I tend to stay a bit back from the enemy as I am still new to the game. I will most likely spend most of the time indoors with a few games outside. I would like one that is accurate (I have allways had a bit of a sniper fetish) but I dont want the flatline (yet) to much tinkering.
So these are the things I would like from my barrel
-Accurate
-cheap (Im a student)
-able to be used on both outdoors and indoor fields
Also what is a good length?
Thanks a bunch

hey man, welcome to the sport, a couple good barrels for you would be the j&j ceramic, or a teardrop, or all american... they're cheap and work fairly well... you want to look for a 12, 14, or at the most 16" barrel, but 12 or 14" is most peoples preferences... and about the sniping thing, try and give this a read first
Snipers in Paintball
hopefully that helped, again, welcome to the sport, and have fun!

I'd say get a 14" J&J Ceramic or a CP 1 Piece. The CP doesn't shoot clean as easy, and isn't as queit. I don't really know how they compare accuracy wise, but I would just go with the J&J.

Wat about a sight or scope of some sort. Is it worth getting one? Im not talking mega zoom more like a "red dot" sight, which from my knowledge is a tube with a dot in the centre.

no, scopes and sights are useless, unless you're into scenarion, dont bother with one, paintballs are not very aerodynamic, and so 99 times out of 100, you wont get a straight flying ball... plus scopes are very bulky.. it's much easier to just aim with the barrel.. you'll get used to it the more you play and find that it isnt as hard as it sounds...

KTTG, stop posting the same thing in every tippmann post, you DO NOT have to take the gun apart fo every upgrade, like the trigger grips, or a new barrel, or a double trigger, or a drop forward, none of those do you have to take the whole gun apart, so shush, and no the stock barrels aren't junk, but they aren't the best thing either, try the j&j l;ike they^ posted earlier, have fun and enjoy the sport.

Im not sitting hear in my chair muttering I have to snipe I have to snipe. I just prefer to not run up infront of the other team and try to "pwned you". I would rather play mid field and have accurate fire thats all.
Edit
I was looking at a JJ ceramic on an internet PB site and it didnt mention what the color of the barrel is. In the picture it is a burnished silver. Is that the colour that is comes in. Would that look odd with a black marker?

ok lol moron
you do have to do most upgrades and a new grip is not a upgrade and u do have to open the gun for the double trigger and most of the things u said are extreamly minor upgrades that dont rilly chnage the guns preformance they are just for looks so dont talk unless u know and ya the stock barrel is trash not like its long it has no rifling its trash dont try to even talk to me cuz i can omly emagine what your gun looks like [stock with a 14 inch barrel and some grips and a drop lol i bet u dont even have a exp chamber]

KTTG_captionJOE - a few observations.
1) use punctuation and proper sentance structure. I am assuming you are not a moron, however it is hard to tell from your posts.
2) If you have an opinon, that is fine. However, lets have an intelligent discussion here and keep the flaming an namecalling to a minimum.
So.... on to the topic at hand. You are looking for a barrel to make your tippman more accurate. That is not really a problem because there are tippman threaded barrels from practially every barrel manufacturer out there. I too like the J&J Ceramic, which is actually a black teflon/ceramic impregnated alluminum barrel.
The J&J is inexpensive, you can shoot through breaks to clear it -- in otherwords, if a ball breaks, you just keep shooting and the subsequent balls act as a squeegee to clear the barrel. In terms of accuracy, they are just as accurate as most barrels. What helps the accuracy the most is a) a consistant air source, and 2) the proper paint size to barrel bore size match. Address any of these things and you will be seeing vast improvement in your accuracy.
That being said, scopes are fairly worthless as you will never have the same ballistic characteristics as a rifle. Why? Paintballs are round and as such are really not ballistic objects -- also they are liquid filled, and that makes the spin on the ball, or lack thereof interact with the trajectory -- in less fancy words, they ain't gonna go exactly where you aim them. THere is no "zero" on a paintball marker, so to speak.
Where the red dots work is for helping you generally aim at your target, however just looking down the side of the marker and watching your paint and adjusting your aim is just as effective.
So I hope that answers your questions..

I haven't seen a J&J yet that wasn't flat black ceramic, other than the silver parts on their barrel kits. I heard they used to use a green ceramic though.
Scopes are worthless because they magnify.
A red dot sight can be used, but it really isn't worth it. The balls will drop and arc enough that you'll probably find yourself not bothering with the sight before too long.
Tippmann barrels are not hard to find. Yes, they have different threads and are thus called Tippmann Threades. That's like saying Angel barrels are hard to find because they are different threads than every other gun.
Most of all, don't be scared of taking your marker apart. It isn't hard at all. The internal diagrams are available for free on Tippmanns website if you get stuck. Just watch out for losing the little spring that is under the front sight. It likes to jump out when you take the sides apart. You can avoid this altogether by leaving the elbow on the side until after you take the gun apart. They take it off and collect the spring.

Trust me.. You don't want to go there.
For the record, I was playing paintball since before you were born, so I do think I have the credibility to make my statements.
As for the rules -- It is my interpretation that makes a difference here. I would suggest you wake up and smell the coffee, cause getting in a pissing match with the staff will get you nothing but banned.
I am giving you the benefit of the doubt here.. don't push it.
