Pro Carbine?
I'm getting into paintball for woods games, no speedball. A couple of my friends play a lot and claim to know something about guns (Headley...). They say to go with a pro carbine. From what I gather, with a new trigger spring and a barrel, that's a quality gun. But, I don't have a lot of money and am looking to buy used anyway. There is about one possibility I found on ebay (I'm looking at ~$70, hopefully less). I see a lot of cheap Spyders though. And is the 98 custom an option? I've played a few times and probably won't be able to play too often, but if I get a gun, I'll play as much as I can. Any words of advice?

Go 98 custom just in case you end up getting bit by the upgrade bug.

If you want to upgrade it, get the 98 custom. If you want to have a good solid gun that needs no upgrades, get the Carbine.

for $70 you can get a spyder xtra which is a nice spyder, you WILL NEED an electronic hopper...make sure you get an electro hopper and the spyder xtra is a decent gun for how much it costs

Thanks all for the replies. Headley was away when I posted, now he's back and convinced me on the carbine. I know I won't go upgrade crazy. I just have to find a barrel now. Another friend informed me about Smart Parts and the All American, but I don't know what would fit. Again, I'm looking on Ebay. And what's the deal with the fronts? Do they make a difference, or is it just style?

From my personal experience, having owned both spyders and tippmanns, I'd say don't go with either. You can get a piranha for the same price, and it blows these guns away. My brother picked up a piranha, and god, those guns are so much better than both spyder and tippmann.

It’s all a matter of opinion really. To me a Carbine is an extension of my own arm. I can do anything I want with it, and I know it will never fail me. That isn’t saying that other markers are not just as equal in the hands of a good player. Carbines do not need that many upgrades to compete with the other woods markers out there. They’re simply that good to begin with, minus the stock barrel that is.
98c’s are good markers as well, I own two of them myself. They simply lack the feel of a Carbine. It’s hard to explain to someone that hasn’t used a carbine and hasn’t fallen in love with it. 98c’s are cheaper, and their construction shows it! They’re very good markers though and I would always take one of them over any Spyder, any day of the week.
Go Tippmann!

You say this because your a fanboy or what? Spyders are great entry level markers. More bang for your buck if you compare a 100 dollar spyder to a 150 dollar Pro/Carbine. IF your just stomping around in the woods, by all means get the Pro/Carbine. Its a solid gun. I played with my friends yesterday and its pretty solid. It needs a better barrel and teh trigger pull is heavy, but those are easily fixed.

The advantages of the ProCarbine over any spyder are few, but definitely worth the extra money. For instance, when is the last time you’ve chopped in a Tippmann? Anyone? Exactly, it’s so rare I can’t even remember the last time I chopped! Now, same question, but for a spyder. For me, it’s the last time I used my shutter a couple weeks ago.
Spyders are extremely over rated. Simple as that. I’m not trying to have a bias opinion; I own many tippmann’s and many spyders. When it comes down to it, all my other markers are just so much better in performance then every single spyder I’ve ever owned or played with.

No bias here, I've never chopped on my piranha. I've double fed in the chrono line because I was an idiot and forgot my alens or something and uncocked and came back and cocked it again. And this is a low-end G3 piranha.
Tippmanns are overrated by many people too, perhaps more hten spyders. Every newbie I see usually wants a 98c with a 3000 inch barrel and a 48x nightvision scope so he can pwn all. Same with many spyder n00bs, and I was one of them at one point too.
Have you considered the fact that a spyder can outshoot a tippmann in terms of speed? You can get a spyder over 12bps easily, but tippmanns usually top out around 10. Maybe you were shooting your tippmann at 7 or 8 bps and then when you went to test your spyder shot at a higher speed.
Its hard to say which gun is better then another ebcuase there are just so many different variables. Adn who cares. Its not like your going to stay stock forever. Your going to eventually upgrade. Its like trying to compare an MP5 to a M4. Both havegreat capabilities, but both are more suited for their own niche.
Go for the pro/carbine, hands down. You won't be able to stand your ground in speedball, but in the woods, its a perfect match.

Tippmanns dont top out at 10. The ebolt by ballistic sports has a full auto 17BPS mode and in response mode (one shot per pull AND one shot per release of trigger) is capable of 30BPS in the right hands.
edit: All stacked tube blowbacks chop.

If a tippmann chops, it because you out shot the hopper....its never the tippmanns fault.

Get a piranha. Very rugged, very reliable, easy to clean and much faster than a mechanical tippman. Ive used tippmans, spyders, and piranhas, all mechanical, all stock, and all well maintained, all base model, and the piranha was better than the others.

I must admit that PMI owns all other stacked tube blowbacks. They invented them after all. I hate the term 'Spyder Clone'. Buuuuuuuuuut, I prefer tippys over even PMIs!
