Reffing desicion
So I was in a tourny this past weekend and I want an opinion on a decision the refs made. So I'll start off by saying that the opposing team had two players left and our team had one. One of the players on the opposing team attempts bunkering the last player on our team but he fails and get lit up. So the ref closest to the action checks our guy and calls him clean. So our guy then bunkers the last opposing player. He then grabs the flag and hangs it. After the game was over the refs circled our guy and pointed at paint that was on his knees and said it came from when he had supposedly been "bunkered" by the first guy. He tried explaining how the paint had come from the ground and he had been on his knees when the guy tried bunkering him so it was impossible that he had been shot there, even another ref who had been watching him the whole time said he had never seen him get hit, but the head ref said he was out from the paint on his knees.

yeah reffing is tough, and i would think that the refs could tell what was a hit and what is a smear of paint from the ground. did his knee have a shell on it? he could have also proved himself by showing that he did/didn't have a mark.

yup, we're only human... as a ref myself, i will tell you ive definitely made some bad calls, but life goes on and there will be more tournaments in the future, you just have to get over it.
reffing really is harder than it looks in serious games. one game in particular i remember is when i saw paint on a guys foot from far away, i went over to check him and pointed to it and he said he stepped on a paintball. from the mass of paintballs on the ground and the shape of the spray of paint and location on his shoe it was believeable, so i didnt call him out. if i had been paying attention before that i might have either seen him step on a paintball or get shot, but its impossible to watch everything at once...

Mainly it made me mad because that team was sponsored by the park where the event was held, some of them were brothers and sons of the owner and all friends with the refs. BTW they whent on to win the tourny.

I reffed at two fields in Ohio and do reffing for rec games around here whenever I know they're going on. It's HARD, partly because there are NEVER enough refs to see everything that happens, and even harder because of the spray vs hit problem.
IMO I wouldn't have called him out after he hung the flag. If the ref that checked him after the first bunker called him clean, that call should stand. They shouldn't turn it around like that- it shows your refs suck because they can't agree even with each other and don't trust the judgement of other refs.
Ref favoritism is bullcrap, it makes for crappy tournament games and turns people away from participating in those same tourneys or playing at those fields. Not cool.

He should not have been out. Getting paint from kneeling on the balls on the ground looks different from a hit. Same with bunker rubs, looks very different then a quarter sized splotch with shell.
I agree with Duo -- if the first ref called him clean and then he hangs the flag, Just where does this second ref seem to think that he got hit from?
I wish there was some type of self leraning module for referee's... it would really help things out.

I hate refs that just stand on the site of the netting and sit there. Atomix's rec-ball reffing is horrible heh. They got kids that have really no experience playing paintball reffing for money .

Yea our team has been screwed over a couple of times because the head ref over ruled the other refs. I had that same exact thing happen to me. I was playing on my knees the whole game and I knelt on a ball that broke and at the end of the game I told the head ref what happened and the ref who was watching me play the whole game told him I had been playing on my knees and hadn't seen me get hit so he declared me clean. That sucks man just hang in there everyone gets bad calls from refs once in a while.

nearly the same thing happened to our team this weekend. One of our back players had some paint on his tank and in the middle of the game the ref saw the paint, called it as clean from another game. Well it came down to a 1v1 with that player and 1 from the other team. Our man shot out the last guy grabbed the flag and hung it. Then the head ref proceeded to say that he was out even though a ref had called it perfectly clean and there was no shell near the paint. That call kept us from the finals

Sorry man but that is your own falt, if the paint was from a previous game. It's YOUR job to wipe off paint from old games, not the refs. It doesn't matter if the paint is there from the current game or from 5 games ago, if you have a hit on you then you're out.

yeah... I can see a ref calling it a hit and taking the player out as a mistake...But when one ref calls it clean...it is supposed to be clean no matter what, no questions asked. Refs should not go back on calls like that.

Yea that's why I don't like how the head ref can over rule any call. We've been screwed over by a head ref once who just wanted the home team to win in the finals, very disappointing.

That pisses me off so much. We've gotten ripped on a few bad calls before. Since when can you get shot on your right side while crawling down the snake with the snake on your right, with the snake being a solid snake? Oh yeah, thats right. You can't, its bunker rub. Stupid refs. That blew the finals for us.
