Question

I have a small question for everybody here. Why the heck do we have most tournaments with speedball? I mean, I like to watch it but to play it, I hate it! So anyway, my team wants to get into some tournaments and I'm wondering, "What in the world should I do? I mean, are there other tournaments for hyperball and woodsball?"
But people arel ooking at me all like this: and then saying to me, "Dude, speedball is the only tournament type." Now I feel horrible. I hate that kind of tournament, I mean, is there any other types? Please if you know anything else about tournaments and different types, tell me ASAP. This may ruin my entire view of paintball's tournaments.

There aren't as much strategy involved as in the regular woodsball or hyperball. Anybody understand what I mean? Or am I going to be alienated here?...

of course there is strategy just maybe not as much, its where the sport is right now, its more of the rush. Would you rather have a tournement thats fun and simple. Or boring and strategic? Im not saying all of woodsball is boring, im just saying its more boring than speedball. I hope i helped.

I know exactly what your saying. Unfortunatelly many tournies are sponsered by paint companies or highend marker manufacturers so they want the speedball style to remain popular so there is a demand for their expensive guns and massive amounts of paint. I would love to see more recball tournies but they seem to be a dying breed. Maybe in the future scenario games will become more popular if camera coverage can be increased. Sky or tree cams would give a nice perspective but are hard to do.

I know what you mean. Becasue of field size the number and types of moves are pretty much know. And from what I've seen of speedball (I haven't played, but want to) it seems to be little strategy but "throw lots of paint here, here and there".

Woodsball, because of the much larger field size, and uneven terrain you can work with the element of surprise, you need to think a little bit more.

As far as tournys for woodsball go, the closest you're going to get is a scenario game. Woodsball is alot more difficult to ref because of the amount of space involved, and depends on the honor system alot more than speedball.

There seems to be a growing number of people that are playing speedball with pump/stock guns. perhaps this is the way for you to go. You get more of a challenge out of it, but your still playing speedball.

Theres a woodsball tourney coming up maybe sn hour or two away from Sarnia, Ontario... That probably dosen't help. I guess more people like speedball.. it's also easier to ref.

But for my area theres a site called www.onpaintball.ca and it shows all the upcoming events, maybe your area has one.

speed ball is quicker tournys would last two days if you had 15 woodsball tourny teams woodsball is also difficult to ref as well so speedball is the way to go for sure

speedball seems to take strategy to me, my backmen have to deside where to throw a lane, i gotta plan my moves as a front player to get the best angles and controlling positions, and some other stuff, if i just ran into a game head first launching paint and running the tape, i would die...

btw

hyperball=speedball

yes, and that can make the games uneven and kind "unfair" if its a tournament

10 years ago, nearly all tournaments, INCLUDING Professional level, were WOODSBALL. Back then, Speedball was looked on as a gimmick for rec-ballers. All the "old" pro teams, like Ironmen, and All Americans started back when all tournaments were woodsball.

People felt that woodsball was MUCH harder, and required much more skill and strategy. WHich is true. Woodsball fields are larger, require more players, and the terrain is uneven. To say that speedball requires more skill does not follow logic.

Obviously, things have changed. Now, most tournaments are speedball, and woodsball is looked on as rec-ball.
WHy the change? Money.

Nearly all tournaments are primarily sponsored by paint companies. Woodsball tournaments have 2 problems for the paint companies:
1- Games are long, and uneven. As a result, less paint is sold and shot.
2- Hard to watch. As a result, hard to sell advertising and promote products.

Switching the format was 100% a business decision. It makes more money, faster. Thats fine. I hate speedball because its boring, and not much of a challenge, but I recognize its a legitimate form of paintball. It has its place, and I don't see an end to woodsball in the near future.

Plus, there is STILL many woodball tournaments AT THE LOCAL LEVEL.
There is nothing better then playing a tournament where you CAN NOT see the other team at the start of the game. Opens about a million different playing variations.

The only way you could have woods ball on TV would be to have set amounts on teams, and to have cameras set up all around the field. That would be kinda cool actually, but hard to do, and you could zoom up on specific players with out giving away thier positions. Not to mention it could go for a while with out any action at all.

You can play woodsball half assed or you can speedball half assed.

Which one requires more tactics usually comes down to what you think is the best. Speedballers are biased against woodsballers. Woodsballers are biased against speedballers.

I like to take my time and be stealthy. I'm just better at it. Theres nothign I like more then working my way into enemy territory then making a 180 and catching the opposing team in a flank. Thats more of a woodsball thing.

Speedball is way more fast paced and much harder. You gotta shoot fast and snap fast if you want to compete at all. In woodsball, I could just croutch in the middle of nowhere without a bunker to hide behidn in sometimes not even take a shot. In speedball, (as my favorite furniture selling dude says) I doubt it.

IT all comes down to personal preference. I like playing woodsball a bit more then speedball, but I naturally do becuase I'm way better at it. Speedball is more of a challenge. Not because there are more tactics involved, but because I can't keep up with it. I'm shooting a Piranha with a mech trigger that has a 300 foot pull. I'm not going to be shooting that fast. I gotta take my time to put my bursts where I want them to go, not just spray and pray.

But yeah. There are plenty of woods games out there. Go find some!

I agree with nick.... One of the things that I like so much about woodsball is that you can't see where the enemies all go during the beginning. It adds a lot to the suspense and intensity when you have no idea where someone is going to pop out. I find the way paintball is currently televised very boring. It's hard to get an idea whats happening as a whole on the field since they jump around from player to player making it hard to keep your bearings. Unlike most other sports PB doesn't have a center of attention like a ball or puck to focus on so the action is all over the place.
