Ok, here is what I did.
I got a gun, played a few games to figure out if I really liked paintball or not. I figured I did and played a lot. I rounded up 2 friends and and started a team. We all had decent guns and liked to play. So we entered our first tourny last summer. We got dominated. We finished 2nd to last becasue the last place teams guns got messed up.
So we didn't win, but we did learn a lot. In your first few, it's all about learning. Just watch the other teams. And more than likely you will find a group of guys in your same position. Get to know some guys and get their cell numbers or whatever.
After you get some local friends, call them every once in a while and have a little practice with them. We practiced with some good local teams and we learned a lot. They showed us where a better lane was than we were shooting, where you should move up too. Most players are real cool and won't mind showing you stuff, or fixing your gun.
After you think your team is ready to move on, play some sponsored tounies. Here in Indiana there are abunch of tournaments sponsored by AKA and Evil. By the end of last year we had a paint sponsorship from Evil.
Even though that team is done with and I am kind of out of paintball for the time being, I had some of the most fun I've ever had. I made a bunch of friends. That was the best year of my life, I had so much fun, learned a lot, made some friends, and played paintball until I couldn't stand it anymore.
The most important thing is have fun. When you get too serious the game becomes stress, not fun. You'll win a few and lose a few. Bad stuff is going to happen to you. Your guns will go down, you'll get bonus balled to hell and back. Just stick with it and have fun.
Goodluck man.

Cost: Depends on the number of players, the size of the tourney, and the league. Around here most tourneys are $65 per person + you need to factor in a case or two of paint to find out the TRUE cost you will be spending.
Eligibility: You get eligable by starting or joining a team, registering by entering your info and paying your fees.
Private: Most local tourneys are not "private" as I believe you are seeing "private" as. I believe they will let any team register, as long as you have a full team, and pay your fees.
What to do: Read Barber's post he knows what to do, and how to do it.

i'd play for a while kid if you are new, and just get out there and have experianced and then i would definitely get some friends that enjoy the sport just as much as you do, get out there and look for Fields that support newbies or have like a tourney practice dates adn stuff. You should try to get out there maybe once a week or every other week for starters when you get a team, some fields can be really cheap if you go on practice days, like i play at a place we have free entry and 35 a case(2000 rd.s) for practice nights. Also i suggest to go out and play all froms of paintball, if you really like speedball, then go with it, and view a couple fo Tourneys and Teams watch how they play learn you don't have to be in tourneys to learn how to play like them, Go to Force of Nature.com it will have some game videos. Really get out there just play, if you and your friends feel confident about it then go out and play a tourney, look for Rookie and beginer tournies.

Barber thanks for writing that and sharing that. I know it sounds dumb but that means alot. You wrote it just right. I've played about 8 years now and thats the best description/idea of how to do it I've heard. It's all about fun thanks man.

Tournys are great fun. My first tourny it was me, my brother, and my friend. We were ages 13, 11, and 16. Are guns were:
Me
Mongoose II Reincarnation
Empire Reloader
Crossfire 47/3000 nitro
Brother
Mongoose II Reincarnation
Halo TSA Backman
16oz CO2
Friend
Spyder Xtra
Regular Hopper
12oz CO2
O it was a blast. Everyone else had DM4s, timmys, impys, bushys, ahockers, and cockers. We actually did pretty good. There were like 5 Rookie divisions with 7 teams each. So that means there were about 35 teams total. We did pretty good getting an average of 2 people out per game. ( it was a 3man tournament ). We placed 20th overall so we did pretty good for our FIRST tournament. We didnt win anything but we were awarded the Sportsmanship Award and we are currently sponsored by the TX Storm. We get whatever they where. Tournaments are fun but they are expensive. Our entry fee was like $180 and paint was $45 a case but there was FREE air. You don't need jerseys. That is an accessory. Ummm dont be intimidated by the other teams equipment or gear or sponsorships. Just go out there and play YOUR game. O and the gun does not make the player. Many people at the tournaments are very helpful. Many people came up to us and gave us tips and all kinds of help and stuff. AND WE MET THE XTPL GIRLS!!!!!!!! SEXY SEXY SEXY
