First Tourney - Help!

I am going to play in my first tournament next summer. It is 3 man team centerflag with a 5 minute time limit. Two of my friends (sadly, even more newb than me) are going to enter with me. I think I am going to play forward because I am the fastest (not the smallest), and the way the score is setup flag pull is really important. We don't have much money, and are all getting new guns after playing for a few months with a Spyder TL-X, a Game Face Vexor, and a Tippmann 98 Custom. We have decided who will play back because he is a lot slower than us. So that leaves our other friend to play mid. Our backman is probably going to get a Diablo Mongoose II (poorest of the three of us, but not by much), mid guy is thinking about Dragun T.E.S., and I am not really sure.

Should getting HPA tanks be a priority? What kind of gun should I get? Are we wrong about playing 1 front, 1 mid, 1 back? How much paint do you think each of us will use? Any suggestions for other guns in the price range for the other two guys? What kind of hoppers? What advice / suggestions do you have?

wait till u guys get more money/jobs, new guns/tourny/paint prices will prolly be too much for u guys, not to mention the money/time u will need to practice.. most tournys, even at the rookie levels, most people shoot, trixes, timmys, angels, ect. not sure if thats the case in ur tourny. if u do play, in a 3v3, have 2 back, and 1 run forward, and having all three guys laning one guy/side off the break is a otb strategy. TESs are good low-mid level guns.. prolly one of the best guns in the price range. co2 is just fine, shouldnt really matter what kinda gas system u use.. for hoppers, 12v revvy w/ x-board or empire reloader.

We're playing beginner (I think it's for first time tourney players only) 15 and under division so I think people might have a little less cash to spend on paintball. Also we have almost a year to get cash, practice, and get ready if we play in September.

well, if u have a year, than maybe save up for some better guns. You could go new lower end or used mid-higher end. 2k2 timmies are 750-800 new, if u find a used, pretty stock one, i bet itd go for pretty cheap, or angel, or trix. if u can find a close to stock one that is in somewhat decent cond. ud be suprised what kinda deals u can get (maybe start looking in the pbn forum BST section to get some ideas) id stay away from the mongoose and those types of markers, cuz mainly they are spyder clones and id go with a tes over that.

stuff that u should for sure have on ur list. revvy w/ x-board or empire reloader. if u get a low-end gun, then those would be fine, and if u get a used higher end gun, most likely it will have an eye or something of that nature so even if u outshoot it, u prolly wont chop. Depending on what gun u get, will most likely decide what kind of tank u should get/need.

if im giving to much info to handle, just ask away ur questions and ill try to make my answers more clearly

The truth:
you WOULD think that 15 and younger would have less cash but myfriends and i just barely turned 16 and we're on cockers, bkos, upped e-99 frame t-board spyders, fishies, etc etc so you never really know what your faced against. And the truth of the matter is that your likely to either be out gunned (extremely likely) or out skilled (i rather be out skilled -.-)

Basic Cost:
First of all pick out what tournament you are going to (try to find out as far ahead in time as possible), plan out first the cost of entry fee for the team (then split into 3) then decide on paint cost. Well back you want to give him at likely 2 cases of paint so theres little worry, and for yourself and your mid depending on what gun and how fast you shoot and how much likely 1-2 cases going more on 2 case. Also always have 1 extra case of paint incase of problems. So this totals between 5-7 cases of paint any left overs you can just keep to use next time. so thats 125-200 dollars worth of paint if your shooting ZAP or Rps shraps. again divide that into 3 or however you see fit.

Basic Gear:
Now that you actually have the cost down, you 3 can set that aside and use whatever cash left over for gear. First of all your going to need pods, doesnt matter if you shoot a PMI Black Maxx or a empire timmy no pods=no ammo =screwd middleof a game. Afterwards it might be time to decide on your guns, hopper, goggles and maybe tanks. Good to decent goggles is a must, cant shoot what you cant see (Jt Proflex , Protoswitch, Dye Invas) Some sort of gearbag is good too, good idea to keep everything nice and neat. Lastly for basic gear is to keep a box filled with every freaking tool for your gun. Never know when you need that last second tighting of your frame. Don't want to be move and shooting and next thing you know your holding your gun frame and wailing on it but then to notice that your holding your frame but your marker's body is on the ground lol...

Hopper:
Hopper really depends on your gun a reloader is a safe bet but if you got a speedy lil demon you need at lease an Eggy if not a halo(so Halo, eggy, or Reloader)

Positions:
Since its only a 3 man theres less back mid and front then normal, all 3 of you should be able to play all 3 positions up to a point. I mean you don't need your back to be superman diving into snakes but at lease hold up in a 1on1 snap shooting contest if it happens to come that way. Its also a good idea to have lots of plans written up, sure you might have the best plan with 2 fronts and 1 back but if your back is shot out there goes your godly plan. Make sure you guys are able to switch to different 2 man plans whenever a position player (front mid back) has been knocked out. Also like i said above practice a lot of 1on1 snaps and just overall 1on1s, 3 mans are fast and often lead to duels in a sense. (Muliple positions, muliple plans)

Markers:
Which leads into guns, now you want decent electros or at lease electro frame guns or a smooth mech gun like a mag or a cocker. The main reason is you don't want to be stuck in a situation where your picking up your back man's sweetspotting job b/c he was marked out while on a 4-5bps spyder, aim for at LEASE 10 full bps like a mech cocker if not higher. (Dragun T.e.s , O3 Mech Cocker, Vert Cocker, Mongoose, Pmi E-forces, spyder e-99 with t-board)

Air:
Tanks isnt that big of a matter yet, at this point basic gear markers and playing cost is more important than if your on co2 or hpa. Although if your teammates are getting a tes or something then anti-S the tank at lease. Also pay for all-day air, its important and don't want to skip on that. (20oz or 12oz are good for co2, 68/3000 at lease for hpa tanks, aim PMI, Nitro Duck, Centerflag, or Crossfire with Cross being the best)

After all that is set, DRILL. If your can't afford to go play at an arena like us then at lease go drill. My team and i setup mock 2on2s, 1on1s, 1on1 snap shooting only, and 1on1 move and shoot only. You can get 4 cases of paint for 100bucksfree shipping, 33 bucks, with a filled co2 tank and a backyard or some remote safe area(cough backyard cough). If theres no room to drill then setup target practices with moving targets, as in swinging bottles, snapping and shooting, and constant moving and shooting at a fixed target. You may not be able to out gun them but you can always out skill them.

Lastely if you have a chance go check out big 3on3 tournaments. We checked out a 3on3 Ama tournament, saw what they do and everything, dunno lots of experience and things to learn watching it.

if i havnt made any sense in anything just IM me, its 1:19 and im pretty tired and have no idea what im writing about at this point...

For a 3-man, a lot of people advise to use 2 backs one front. That way you have two guys laning and covering for one front.

Paint: If you guys pull paint, spring for 6 cases or so, if you find cheap stuff, you can get that for 150-200 bucks. If you want to buy individually, just have every person buy as much as they can afford, that way you don't have to worry about using too much, and you can keep extras for practices/future tourneys. Its always better to be safe than sorry, especially on paint.

HPA tanks: In my advice, I would highly suggest you to get HPA tanks if you can afford it. Most if not all tourneys fill HPA, and a lot give all day air with entry. Also, HPA is more consistant, so you won't have as many balls going 20 feet apart from eachtoher.

Markers: Get the highest grade markers you can. I would suggest an Impulse or b2k for the mid price ranged guns. With the highest grade marker you can afford, you can be faster, possibly have eyes, and have more people that own them and can help you figure out problems with it.

Hoppers:I would suggest an Empire Reloader B, or a Revvy, depending on how much you want to spend, and how fast you are going to shoot.

Advie: Practice, and always expect the worst, that way you never have anything to be disappointed about. If you guys can practice, go out and do it. That way you guys can learn to work better together. Also, COMMUNICATE. Have your backs and front be talking throughout the whole game. Let eachother know where they should shoot, and where people are, and what angles people have on them.

Good luck, and just have fun.

When I asked how much paint, I really meant how much a game, per person, that way we would know how much paint to carry, and how big of HPA tanks to get.

The situation is now that one back guy wants a Dragun The One, other back guy wants a Dragun T.E.S., and I'm thinking I might get a cheap autococker. Someone said that we should save up for better guns. We're actually saving up for these guns.

The beginner division is supposed to only be for players at their first tournament. Now, we were thinking that playing in beginner we could get away with having cheap guns. If we get really lucky the tournament will be after the one back guy's bar mitzvah, and he thinks he might get a couple grand from that. So now more comments on the gun choices and advice.

if u live in cali i will come help u out...and i just got back from a tourny and the ppl there were all nervous about a 5 min limit and really the games only last an average of 30 sec. a min and a half tops. i bought 3 cases of paint for the tourny and only ended up shooting about 1. so paint is not a huge deal.

Yeah, I live in SD. The tournament is going to be at Velocity in Ramona. That really was what we needed to hear. Even if we only used a case or two, we still might not be able to afford the tournament. It really depends on our fundraising efforts. There is no way that we will be able to have the cash for new guns, entry fee, paint, entry fee for practice fields, paint for practice, etc. by the tournament unless we do a whole lot of car washes or something. Today we're going to talk to our principal to ask if we can set up a food stand thing at school. We would make so much money. For $3 we can get 2 bags of candy, and people would buy it for 50 cents a piece, and still think they were getting a deal.

yeah

I was, and kind of still in this situation. The quipment can come later, because it only takes one shot, make sure wehn you go to the tourney you work on teamwork, and how to use shooting angles and stuff. This is your first tourney, so you wont be used to the speed of the games, unitl your 3rd or 4th game. So make sure you get better at this tournament. Work on talking and snap shooting. This will help you, when you get ur high-end marker that can shoot faster then a blowback. JUST HAVE FUN! dont get caught up in winning and losing, because you wont have any fun. So Have fun, and get better
