"musicians"?
So I got to thinking, with the way a lot of modern entertainers/bands (whatever you want to call them) produce their music, can a lot of them even really be considered musicians as in artists? A lot of bands nowadays just produce things in such a fashion that is marketed to try and bring in the most revenue. That's not what art is, that's business.
Take Avril Lavigne for example. She started out as a country singer until she got signed. When she got signed, she all of a sudden got dressed to be a different look (she had never looked or dressed this way before, just look at tapes of her younger days on like Vh1 and such), to fit what was at the time a largely growing "punk" scene, to attract those type of people. On top of this, she wrote NONE of the music and NONE of the lyrics for the first cd, that's right, with such song titles as sk8r b0i, who would've guessed it was the head honcho businessmen that came up with all that?
This crap isn't art, you think any painter could get away with something like that? The music is being created anymore with a lot of bands like these, it's being manufactured . To me that just sucks, anything that is done purely for the money just sucks.
Real musicians and artists that can be called such actually create original things that come from the heart, and/or make a statement to the world. Like Picasso's Guernica, or Beethoven's many conflicted compositions. Even rock bands that don't totally sell their sole are still musicians, Eric Clapton is a great musician, so was Jimi Hendrix, etc.
I could go on but you get the picture, and I beg the question, can a lot of todays bands/entertainers really be considered musicians/artists?

go to london, and watch the musical "we will rock you"
the storyline is eh
the acting can be better
the ending kinda sucks
but the music is awesome
and it has a message about music
you should go out and see it, i'm sure you'll like it...as long as you like the band Queen

Hey dude, gabriot, if knew who you were, i would hug you. music in all forms is my life, i am in band and even plan to major in music. I couldn't agree with you more, when i listen to the crapola that comes over the radio, somtimes i just want to cry. Take rap for instance. While i do believe rap is an excellent form of art and expression. It simply isnt music. by the way dude what bands do you like, If your really into music, you should listen to symphany x , they rock like true musicians
But dude to answer your questions, i believe that it is still technically music, some of that horrible crap that people listen to, but its only considered music because people standards of what is good music have declined drastically over the past 50 or so years. im not saying im just some old man who only listens to beetoven. because i listen to EVERYTHING I CAN GET MY HANDS ON
I have favorite bands from almost every genre of music (except country)
I also know of bands that claim to be metal musicains or latin music legends, but unfortunatly many know less music theory than a table of babboons playing poker. I will not name any of the bands that i hate because i dont want to make anyone angry. Instead here are a few great musicians and bands that each define their genre of music perfectly. And if you folks have an interest in music and how it should sound, then listen to some of these guys
In the metel genre-Dream theater, Symphany x, Rush and other progressive greats
In the rock genre - led zepplin, queen, and way too many greats to name
In the Jazz/fusion genre- tower of power, dave brubeck quartet, and the buddy rich big band (for any hopeful jazz drummers, this is a must)
music is in my opinion the greatest and most diverse of the fine arts, and unfortunatly the fad of bad music has led to numerous cliche's that are sickening to anyone who has a true ear for music.

nope sorry, their IS a soundtrack though...it's coming to Chicago IL eventually
but what i liked most about the one in london is that they have the remaining original queen members playing the music and in bohemian rhapsody (the finale) they come down to the stage and the guitarist Brian May comes center stage with his guitar and plays the solo's

Basically anything that has nothing to do with popular culture has meaning. Thus, most everything on MTV is BS. It's simple math really:
(musical artist+MTV)/talent=****.
yay! Not even a single variable it's so simple.

pure genious, couldn't have said it better myself.
you wanna know why the music that is considered popular sucks so much these days? MTV . well folks there it is , the thing that ruined and will continue to ruin the art of music. it must be stopped ...........somehow
whats really funny is how you can ask a non musicaian what there favorite bands are and it will usually be bands that musicians dont like. anyone who studies and plays music, realizes that most of the popular stuff just doesn't take that much talent to compose or play.

Ice cream used to be made by hand with lots of hard work, but now we have machines to manufacture it. Can we really consider it ice cream anymore?

I started listening to indie music because I can't stand any of the mainstream stuff anymore. I can't even listen to one radio station in my city...
Christian music is the same deal, it's untalented people who need to play off their religion to get record sales.
by the way, there is a hillarious south park episode where cartman makes a christian band, definatly one of the best episodes I've seen.

That has about nothing to do with this idea, seeing as Ice Cream isn't an art form in the first place anyway.

I feel the same way with not only most christian music, but most christian anything. It's commercialized christianism which completely defies what the basic laws of christians are supposed to follow. I guess using a lot of the money to donate is still better than most other corporations are doing with their money, but still, their marketing a lot of things as 'christian' just to put the tag on it and sell it to christians.

anyways, I see where your coming from. Never really thought about music that much since all I do is listen to it, but what you speak is the truth.
