Need help from those who have been to shows!

Alright, I just got hired by the school newspaper in the photographer and graphic artist positions. I have been a photographer for about a year now, and just knowbasic graphics stuff but thats all they need. To cut to the chase:
I'm going to be shooting a lot of hardcore shows and other shows in Atlantic City and the surrounding area. Mostly at the House of Blues and others. Some known upcoming concerts :
Lamb of God
Norma Jean(Lighter I know)
Other hardcore Bands I don't remember.

I don't listen to it, but I enjoy it. Any good bands out there I can download to start to get an idea on when there are good breakdowns to photograph and such?

Also, any tips on where to go to get a good vantage point, where to stay away from, etiquitte, pet peaves of the audiecnes there specifically? Any help or advice is much appreciated since I am going in blind if I don't get any help. Thanks guy.

well, to the HoB ive been to, you can usually get some good shots from upstairs. I dont know if you would want to do this at any "hardcore" concerts but you can get right up against the front railing usually and just when the show starts take some pics, than move upstairs and get some good pics (zoom and whatnot) but ya, i would just move around a lot and get different angles and stuff..... then again im not a photographer. good luck.

Don't get pissy if someone kicks you or hits you. It happens, you'll just start fights.
Stay away from the edge of the pit or someone is likely to hit you, possibly breaking a camera.
(neither of those bands are hardcore)
But some bay area hardcore bands check out- On A Warpath, Hoods, The Warriors, etc.
Then theres your generic- Terror, Throwdown, etc.
Just find out what bands are playing around you and check out some of their songs.
