Teach me the ways of aperture. I hate using the Auto mode but I've set my own aperture a few times and it turned out alright.

L is nice, but AF-S and VR is so much better... hehe.
Nick - I'm assuming you want to learn how to set the aperture and let the camera control the rest? Think smaller number(f2.8, f1.8) is going to let more light in, which allows for a shallower depth of field. If you have a shallow depth of field, then you have that blurred out background along with fast shutters which help stop any action. If you want deep depth of field such as in a landscape, stop down to f/16ish land, and if you aren't quite sure, experiment.

Set your camera to Av mode. It's basically a semi-manual mode where you choose aperture, and iso, and the camera decides the appropriate shutter speed.
Like Joe said, small f# = shallow depth of field. Because you're letting in more light with a bigger aperture, then you need to use a fast shutter speed to counteract it. Fast shutter speeds help eliminate motion blur and any camera shake.

My GF is really huge into photography, so I've taken a bunch of pictures of her lately since it's been getting a little warmer and greener.
here's a couple more (they're posted on PBN too BTW)
And her from a few days ago at my house (no makeup).
