hey good idea for this part of the forum. I never thought about music tech. I have heard that the ipods bat life stinks. I can't really say cause I don't own either.

thats a start I don't subscribe online and I don't feel like taking the time to set up an account. I would accept what consumer reports says over any person on a paintballforum. I did notice they had something in the mag a while back comparing them try your school or area libr.

I have a 10 gig and I absolutely love it. I only have, like, 700 songs on it, though. I say "only" because I still have over 6 gigs of space left... I haven't heard anything about the Dell DJ, so I can't really put any input into it.

10 gigs of music is ****ing gigantic. I downloaded over 80 metallica songs, all being an average of 5 minutes long each. I have yet to reach the 500MB marker.

There are more MP3 players out on the market than the iPod with much more functionality. I bought a Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 when it came out, its not tiny (its actually about the same size as a portable CD player) but it has support for 4.1 channel surround, plus you can record directly from any audio source. It also has the capability to run for 20 hours on a single battery charge if you buy a second battery for it (it has two bays.)
If you want a compact player, Creative makes a smaller version called the Nomad Zen, its about the same size as a iPod but it has line in support.
Look beyond the iPod, there's a lot of higher-quality players that are much cheaper. The new iPod mini costs $250 for 4 GB of space, while for another $50 you can get a player with five times that much storage.

I'm still deciding on wether or not to get 15 or 20 gig...it really depends on what type of comp you have. I think iTunes is really easy to work with, and i have a mac already.

Yah, my bro just got one of the 40 gig iPods from his wife and it definately rocks. I have seen some of the other ones out there but the iPod is my favorite out of the different ones I have used. I am trying ot get my family to get me the 15 gig one for my birthday next month.

Read: iPod=rip off.
No FM tuner.
Uses IEEE 1394 (firewire) rather than USB...USB is ubiquitous while firewire is rare.
Battery is not replaceable without voiding warranty/paying obscene amount of money for replacement.
Lack of functionality (such as line in, surround and on-the-fly encoding.)
Low play time on one charge vs. comparable products.
High price.
Made by Apple (opinion...)
I don't think you guys really believe that the iPod is the best on the market...you just don't know of anything else. Like I said, shop around and you'll find better products at a lower price.

I dont know why firewire is a bad thing. It is faster than usb and you can get a firewire card for cheap.
By the time the battery dies, it is most likely out of warranty anyways so you just go on ebay and pick up a broken ipod for 20 bucks and you have a new one.
Those options are not neccessary things and the iPod is still great without them
The price is not too high, especially when you get educational discounts for working at a school
The battery lasts for quite a long time. I dont remember how long my brothers lasted, but it was long enough that I could never have used it that much without having the opporitunity to recharge.
