barrel and paint 101

Barrels 101
A barrel is the most important upgrade to your gun that you can make. . Now, what makes a good barrel?

Smooth
The smooth and straight surface on the inside makes up a large part of your barrel's accuracy. Stainless barrels, and just about any barrel with a special coating on the inside are virtually frictionless. This makes for a very accurate barrel. Of course, porting, bore size, and length can play a great role in the accuracy of your barrel too.

Porting
Porting is helps a great deal on any barrel. This much is clear as just about every manufacturer ports their barrels these days. When a paintball is fired, the gas expands rapidly behind the paintball. The paintball does not make a perfect match with the barrel and some gas escapes the barrel before the paintball flies right into the head of your… oops teammate! Quick, hide behind your bunker before he sees it was you! This effect can create a turbulence that the paintball is forced to fly through. Non-ported barrels can send a paintball off into la la land every now and then as some of you might have noticed when your teammate walked off the field cursing rather loudly. Here is where the porting comes into play. As said before the gas expands rapidly behind the ball. The porting vents the air out right after the ball stops accelerating in the barrel and prevents the turbulence effect. An added bonus is porting makes the barrel a lot quieter.

Bore Size
The bore size of a barrel refers to the inner diameter. Paintballs come in all sizes, and a small bore paintball should be shot through a small bore barrel. Large ball to large barrel and so on. An easy way to test if you have the right fit is put the ball in the barrel, and try to blow it out. If it shoots out, you're match is perfect. If it barrel moves, the bore is too small for the paintball, or the ball to big for the barrel. If it roles, out, vice versa. Most the barrels and paintballs are medium bore.

The Mysterious 18 incher
The longer the barrel does not necessarily mean the more accurate. A 12" barrel is usually very similar to a 16" barrel of the same design in accuracy. Now, the difference is YOU, the player. Most people, whether or not they realize it sight by the tip of their barrel. The longer the barrel, the more "on target" it will be when you point your gun giving you the illusion of thinking your longer barrel is more accurate.

A side note, it is good to have several different barrels to accommodate for changes in weather (hot, humid weather makes paintballs swell, cool weather will shrink them) and varying paintball sizes

Paintball Care
Good paintballs will make or break your day. Bad paint sucks. It is the bane of a paintballer’s existence. Don’t waist your time on cheap paintballs, you will only end up cleaning your gun and your barrel in the staging area.

The only problem is that just no matter how good the manufacturer is, sometimes a bad batch of paintballs slip through. Chance of this happening with the more expensive paints is very rare, however. You do pay for quality. Another thing you’ll see is that the weather plays a big roll in affecting your paint. Try to keep your paintballs out of the elements as much as you can.

Another thing to be careful of is DO NOT store your paintballs packed inside your tube. Some people like to sit around the night before they play and fill up their tubes ahead of time. Forget about it, this is not good for the paint. Another thing I see is people that have 20 tubes, fill them all up at the start of the day and they switch their full ones for empty ones as the day progresses. Don’t do this either. The paint stores better in the bag.

Dimples
Your paintballs are not perfectly round, they do have tiny imperfections, but for the most part this does not affect accuracy. Some paintballs even have dimples on them, which many paintballers think is horrible. If you pull out a handful of paintballs and some have a dimple on them, don’t worry about it. That is usually not enough to effect accuracy. But if you see just about all of them have LOTS of dimples, you got a not so good batch of paintballs. Not much you can do usually but grin and bare it if it happens to you.

To an extent, you can prevent the “bouncy ball” problem by leaving your paintballs in the bag inside of your car with the AC running. If you have your paint in a harness, in between games put your harness and gun in the care and let it cool down. This may be a little extreme, but every little bit helps.

Bouncy
If you are using hold paint, or paint left out in hot/humid or wet weather, chances are most of them will bounce. I’ve had referees tell me that my paint was bouncing off people’s goggles and nitrogen systems before. We won the game, so I was not disturbed, but it would sure suck to loose on the account of your balls bouncing.

Brittle
If you seem to be breaking a lot of paint, either the paint sucks and is a very low quality, you have a bad batch, or it is extremely cold outside. One thing to note, try not to use a stainless steel barrel in cold weather. Stainless gets very very cold and the ice cold metal will make your paint very brittle. If possible, have your car running with the heat on (not too high) and toss you paint in there when you are not playing.

Freakshow
If your paintballs are a bunch of funny shapes (from ovals to squarish) and look like they belong in a circus act, you are basically out of luck. The paint you are using is either a very bad batch, or most likely you are using cheesy paint. Spend a couple more bucks on paint or yell at the field owner/tournament promoter for using garbage for paintballs.

i can show you what it really means to plagerise. i got banned a while back for the same thing. the part that really sucks is...to teach you a lesson..i know the owner of pbstar (chris) i worked for him a couple of times making sure the forums looked good. eventually i quit and have been working my own site. i'm going to link chris over here and he will tell me what he thinks. i used one of his images for my site (ONE IMAGE) and he cancelled my hosting account. please beaware that plagerism is horrible.
