A suggestion to the mods

to stop some of this ungodly bad spam.

Require users to have AIM/ MSN/ or yahoo conversations with , at least, a member before being allowed to register. IT would be fairly simple, call for a few volunteers to help out the mod staff, have each person create a "confirmation" aim/msn/yahoo account, and require newly registering members to im the volunteers. These folks could then pass along that theyve confirmed the identity of said user.

At the very least it would be nice to do that for free-email adresses.

The whole premise would be to have closed registration to emails that are realy simple to get and the spammers use alot. If its an actualy member, and they have a sub 5 minute chat with one of the "volunteers" on AIM, it would be a helluva lot easier to confirm they werent spammers...

IDK about the idea, but supporters would probably be the ones to "interrogate."

what if they dont have aim?

i'm sure something simple like that would be easy to figure out - but do you really think that we could always have someone online for 24 hours so that somebody could find and talk to a single person who is online if they want to join at 3:00am?

not only that, but i'm sure it would be easier just to ban somebody than to have to recognize new members and send something allowing people to join every time somebody wants to join...

something simmilar would be nice, but i dont really like that idea myself... (sorry)

IMO, the spam isn't that bad, and easy to ignore. Not much of a problem

It wouldnt necessarily be a 24 hour thing either. There would probably be individuals on at varying times of the day. If ISP provided email adresses were not restricted, it would also limit it only to people using hotmail/gmail/etc. type accounts.

Demon, the problem is, the only way to get them to stop is to stop it BEFORE the bot program can post. Thats what the e-mail confirm was for initialy, but now it will "autorespond". By banning them AFTER the first round of posts, youve let them accomplish there objective. In a way this is taking the idea of "email confirmation" to a higher level. As far as not having AIM/MSN/Yahoo..... its a ten minute download on even a dial up connection. If someone is absolutley not able to get on it, Im shure there could be a "safety valve" system installed, were its the administrators/moderators discretion.

As far as who did it, My intitial though was to allow members in good standing(ie those not being banned on a regular basis for acting like idiots) that wanted to volunteer do it simply to avoid piling more work on the moderation and support team. Thats not my call however, it would be entirely up to the administrators(as is the whole idea in itself...)

but you would have to be on at 10pm every night. that could become very cumbersome.

i'm not saying it's a bad idea - i would love to see it go through, i could even volunteer from about 12pm to 5pm or so monday, wednesday and friday... (i could be at work and leave aim on waiting for people to message me... also i could be on tuesday and thursday as well, but i have school on both those days so it would depend on what time i could get in.) that way i could guarantee i'd be online...

but the logistics of this could/would have to be immense with many volunteers, waiting online to be sent an IM. so the administrators would have to set up a schedule as well - and the list would have to include who to IM, at what time, and their alternate IM (which could be another person waiting at the same times) in case they cant respond.

What about having the member signing up email the staff back, instead of just click a link that automatically allows you to post? Or is that already being used...

No it not being used but it could still be subverted by an autoresponder to a certain extent. I have a couple of Ideas for "confirmation conversations" that are fairly foolproof, even with an AIM autoresponder, that could be used in an email format as well(dont want to go into that....trust me it would be hard to get around)..

that's a good idea, actually you could even say "you're speaking to an auto-responder bot for Paintballfourm.com, this will be recorded and reviewd by our moderators and you will be sent an e-mail confirming that you are, actually a person and not a robot" as an opener.

lol...

that'd be kindof strange... which would make us a one of a kind and on the leading edge of forum technology! yays for us!

Or you could make them write random words as the email...so that it's not an auto response message. I don't know if that's possible or not...but it could kind of be like the random letters that you have to type to sign up which obviously don't work anymore...

The autresponder isnt a bad idea onthe part of confirmation, but that only works for aim unfortunatly. The random words idea is exactly what ive got in my head, but adding another step for SPECIFIC random words.

i think if anything, this idea would drive away a lot of potential future members.. i know that i hate registering for forums and crap, and making hte process even longer and whatnot would not be something i would want to go through just to become a mamber of an online forum.

Eh, I see pluses and minuses. This would also help to keep idiots out of the forum as well.

I'd be more than happy to volunteer, especially around xmas time, I'll be home all the time except for a couple days when I go to sea island.

If random kids sent me IMs every 30 minutes, I would kill my internet cord.

they'll probably save your IM name and send you a message everytime they have a question. Instead of using the forum, they'll all just ask Barber

agent5556 does that to me now, but it doesn't really bother me, I like having someone to talk to in my lonley life now and then.

Thus why I was talking about specific "registration only" type names, nto personal handles.

At least you're thinking

On the other hand, I don't like jumping through hoops just to post. Or worse, the forums that make you register just to read the content.

How about expanding on your idea, what if we had AOL names on occasion and acted like confused new players to see who from the supporters and staff are up for helping when no ones watching?
